Ron Paul’s Surprising Military Support
By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Military, VideoI don’t think it’s surprising, but many in the GOP do.
Rep. Ron Paul (Texas), the anti-Iraq war candidate for the Republican presidential nomination and darling of the Internet, said his colleagues have taken notice that he has raised more money from active service members than any other GOP White House hopeful.“Lots of military people turned out to be aware that our campaign got more donations from soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines than any other,†said Paul in a statement on his website. “Funny, that made a big impression in Congress too. Many of my colleagues were amazed and encouraged that you can be against this unconstitutional and disastrous war, and get military support.â€
While campaign spokesman Jesse Benton did not name names, he said that “two southern Republicans†recently approached Paul. They noted that his success in getting money from members of the active military is “turning some heads.â€
Could it be that since he wants all the soldiers to come home as soon as possible he’s getting the most donations from them?
Hmmm…maybe they want to come home?
Also, here’s an interview with him on FOX this weekend…

It was interesting to see just how many Republicans applauded when Ron Paul said we should bring our troops home during the Iowa debate. Then you heard a small minority of tired old Republicans (the booing the the idea we should bring them home.
It always amazes me to the extent of which some Republicans will continue to support just atrocious policies. The war in Iraq is a disaster, yet they want to stay and win. We all do, the question is, will we spend every last dime to “succeed”?
America might be tempted to go for this “we got to stay or we will just have to come back” argument if we didn’t already know better. Vietnam people, same arguments–same failed policies. But now they say, oh! we have vested interests, this is where we get our oil, we can’t let it fall into chaos. Perfect! put America into a catch-22 situation and make them have to agree no matter what, after all, we can’t leave even if we want to know, we got to “stay the course.” Well! thank you very F’ing much! It might have been nice if we weren’t lied into this war and blackmailed to stay in it. We are screwed either way, is that it?
Ron Paul is right and these other Republicans are contemptible. Oh! and John McCain, we know all about your service to our country, how about you stop bleeding it for everything it’s worth to win you office. Tooting your own horn for gain is nearly unstomachable.

It’s really not that surprising. Most of the people in the military are REAL conservatives not Neo-cons. The Neo-cons are civilians, who most often have either never served in the military or had some lame deferment during Vietnam.
Recall that during the congressional debates about Bush’s kangaroo military courts and the importance of torture, it was military lawyers who testified against the measures, and civilian Republican hacks in the Pentagon who were enthusiastic.
Ron Paul is pure conservatism, without the fundie crap or the Neo-con pseudo-intellectualization.

I am with Becky — in so many ways. God bless you child for all that you are and all that you support.

As far as I am concerned, the neo-cons are almost single-handedly destroying everything this country was built and founded on, and obviously the ironic part is they are in a party that is supposed to be for limited government and federal spending.

Americans want change in Washington!
The American people are against those in Washington starting illegal preemptive unnecessary wars, spying on the American people, and spending money they do not have. That is why disproval ratings of Congress and President are at historic lows. Americans want change! Americans want a leader who actually believes in the Constitution which is incredibly rare in Washington these days.
70% of Americans want us out of Iraq and want change.
Ron Paul is only republican candidate against the war.
Ron Paul only needs about 30% vote from republicans sick of the war and abuse of powers to win in republican primaries.
Ron Paul is not against war as a pacifist.
Ronald Reagan said that “Ron Paul is one of the outstanding leaders fighting for a stronger national defense. As a former Air Force officer, he knows well the needs of our armed forces, and he always puts them first.â€
Ron Paul is just against illegal preemptive unnecessary wars that make America and the world less safe.

Ron Paul can win.
Ron Paul has over 30,000 registered volunteers. More than all other candidates combined (maybe more than any candidate in history). And more registering now at Meetup.com.
Dr. Ron Paul has the most contributions from U.S. military personnel and veterans above all other candidates. So support the troops and vote Ron Paul!
Ron Paul places 1st or 2nd in every straw poll, debate, and active participation survey.
Ron Paul is 1st on YouTube, Meetup, MySpace, Technorati, Alexa, Clickz, Google, etc. The old media is just too slow to realize what is happening.
Do not listen to the so called ‘Scientific Polls’. Ron Paul is not included in the cleverly woven questions pollsters are asking. This has been well documented.
Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton were doing about the same in the ‘Scientific Polls’ at this stage in their elections. ‘Scientific Polls’ at this stage only measure name recognition. Over the next six months Ron Paul will gain name recognition. Most people who learn about Ron Paul become major supporters.
A big problem with our electoral process is that the old media generally supports the richest candidates (who got their money from special interest). Those are the worst candidates because they are owned by special interest and lobbyists. Hopefully the internet will help restore balance and choice.
Dr. Ron Paul is the only major candidate not owned by military-industrial-complex, corporations, special interest, lobbyists, etc. Fix the system and vote Ron Paul. And tell everyone you know. Now is the time to set ourselves free.
The American people know that something is very wrong in Washington. The American people want change!

Ron Paul cannot win the general election if confronted on his positions concerning Social Security, Medicaid, Medicare, the FDA and the EPA. Why the Paulistas cannot recognize this simple reality is beyond me.
August 7th, 2007 at 9:39 pm
To Jim S – Jim, I don’t think you have dug in to see his positions on those issues. He does not want to turn off the switch and throw people out in the streets. He wants to cut spending overseas and use the money to tide the people over that have become dependant on the government till the programs can be phased out.
I have been watching and reading for awhile now and I asked myself lots of the same type of questions you did. Some of his thoughts do sound a bit radical untill you dig. It is very hard for a candidate to lay out step by step plans when they have 30 seconds to speak on an issue in a debate, this is why YouTube is so great, you can go watch speeches and interviews where he has plenty of time to explain his positions.
Ron Paul is a very compasionate person and knows we cannot leave people to starve in the streets. What he does say however is that we can cut spending, take care of the truly needy or dependant, and allow a transition to where future generations accept responsibility for their own retirements and healthcare. These things can be accomplished in many ways, not the least of which is to legalize interestate competition for health insurance, and abolishing the income tax. With more competition in the health insurance business and more money in your pocket there is no reason that anyone can’t get good insurance at an affordable price.
This will not happen overnight and we all know this, but we must start somewhere, and the time to start is now, not later when we are in a financial crisis.

Dear Dan Warner,
We are in agreement.
MOST people get all their (mis)information from network television and network news.
People don’t know what’s out there because the information isn’t spoon-fed to them on whatever channel they watch.
Researching requires an effort that most Americans have been bred and taught since birth to suppress.
My friends from college and I don’t watch the news on TV; we get our news from the internet because we can recognize biased opinions.
Let’s encourage people to research a little unbiased news for themselves.
Ron Paul is the only Republican candidate who has conservative views in ALL MAIN TOPICS. Remember that republicans were elected to end The Korean War and the Vietnam War. Expensive wars defy the very nature of the traditionally conservative Republican party. “Just come home.”

Dan Warner says
So? He still wants to eliminate them, doesn’t he? I hate to burst your bubble but libertarians are insane whack jobs who have no concept of the real world and are extremely full of themselves. In the real world if the social safety net is eliminated people won’t magically be OK because the government is off their backs. The money that their employers save in taxes will not through the goodness of their hearts be distributed to the employees. The growing inequality of incomes and assets in this country has nothing to do with government interference, it’s the nature of the unrestrained capitalist beast. The one that Ron Paul believes in with all of his heart. As far as the belief that all we need to take care of the broken health care system is competition, sorry but that’s a complete myth. It’ll never make one bit of difference. I wish you well in your church attendance at the temple of the First Church of Free Market, where they know that there is absolutely no problem that can’t be solved by unrestrained, unregulated capitalism, the most sociopathic god this side of Kali.

Someone give Jim S. a cookie for speaking his mind. But it better be a cookie made from a state sponsored cookie factory with unionized cookie makers in a regulated cookie wrapper. Okay, we’re going to have to pool our money to get Jim S. his cookie, because that is going to one expensive cookie and someone is probably going to have to travel a ways just to get the damn cookie. By the way, I am definitely not going to be investing into that cookie business – I don’t think they are going to make any money. No fear, new law – every family must order at least one package of state-sponsored cookies a month – there by supporting the cookie makers. What if you don’t like their cookie? Tough shit – welcome to Jim’s America.
Libertarians may in fact be whack jobs, but they’re freedom loving intelligent whack jobs. Jim S. and his ilk though, are pups that have to be weaned from suckling mommy’s tit. Their whole existence revolves around a BIG WHINE about inequality, unfairness and victimology. Please, move to fucking France, eat cheese and feel superior – your doing nothing but wasting resources in this country.

Many, if not most people on social security would rather not have to live on so little money, or are determined that they are going to get out every penny they put in. Ron Paul says that with a real free market (no corporate welfare and manipulation of the economy by the FR) and sound monetary policy there would be more jobs that pay better, and the dollar would buy much more. Poor people would not need the Earned Income Credit to live…they would not have to wait until February to have a little extra money every year. And those who pay taxes…could you imagine what kind of savings and investment (entrepreneurship, property ownership) they could build, charitable efforts they could make, and inheritance they could leave their children if they got their ENTIRE PAYCHECK!!!????? Don’t we work from January to April to cover the tax burden??? Also, there is work for everyone…bridges to be repaired and built, schools, farming, science and technology, and so on…and slave labor is not NEEDED.
What has the FDA done for you really? And the EPA…I know poor children live in bad housing, attend filthy schools, and breath more air from industrial areas and are more affected by asthma and lead than other children. So what have they done for us? Now, much of Ron Paul’s ideals hinge on the common man getting his just, fair day in court…which I am thinking is more difficult than ever before… I am starting to understand the contempt for attorneys more and more every day…
But really…all these regulations and laws seem to lead directly to a government contract of one sort or another…even in education. Just follow the money…

I CAN APPRECIATE DR PAUL’S STANCE ON THE WAR, HOWEVER, DENNIS KUCINICH IS ALSO FOR BRINGING OUR TROOPS HOME NOW……. NOT “AS SOON AS POSSIBLE”, LIKE PAUL. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY DEMOCRATS HAVE BEEN SEDUCED BY RON PAUL. LIBERTARIANS ARE TRULY ANTI ALL GOV PROGRAMS AND REGULATIONS. FOR INSTANCE, RON PAUL WANTS ALL GUN LAWS ABOLISHED…. TO ME THAT IS AN INSANE IDEA. LOOK AT THE LATEST SHOOTINGS THIS MONTH ALONE TO SEE THAT GUNS ARE TOO EASILY PUT IN THE HANDS OF THE CRIMINAL MIND, THE FRUSTRATED AND THE POOR.
ALL I ASK IS THAT THE RON PAUL SUPPORTERS TAKE A LOOK AT ALL THE ISSUES NOT JUST THE WAR ISSUE BEFORE MAKING HIM “THE MAN” OF THE HOUR.
PAUL IS ALSO SUPPORTED BY DAVID DUKE (KKK) AS WELL AS THE CHRISTIAN COALITION, JOHN BIRCH SOCIETY AND EVEN THE TERRORIST OF THIS COUNTRY, THE NEO NAZIS’……..PERSONALLY THAT SHOULD RAISE THE BROWS OF MANY PROGRESSIVES, CIVIL RIGHTS ACTIVIST ETC, THESE GROUPS DO NOT REPRESENT MY IDEALS AND VALUES. DO THEY YOURS?
IF YOU ARE A DEMOCRAT AND BELIEVE IN A WOMAN’S RIGHT TO CHOOSE…….RON PAUL BELIEVES THAT” LIFE BEGINS AT CONCEPTION” AND WILL REVERSE ROE VS WADE ( GAINING CHRISTIAN COALITION VOTERS) HE IS A “NATIONALIST” ( GAINING THE NEO NAZIS raciest APPROVAL)
AND HE IS AGAINST THE WAR( GAINING THE LIBERAL VOTE). HE IS AGAINST ANY , REALLY ANY , GUN CONTROL LAWS ( LIBERTARIAN VOTES)
SO, HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE? HOW CAN HE BE EVERYTHING TO EVERYBODY?
ALSO, RON PAUL SAYS HE IS AGAINST GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION OF OUR PERSONAL RIGHTS YET HE IS FOR THE GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION OF A WOMAN AND HER BODY. THIS SHOULD BE UNACCEPTABLE TO MOST DEMOCRATS. ALL WOMEN SHOULD PAY ATTENTION TO HIS STATEMENT. “LIFE BEGINS AT CONCEPTION AND THAT ROE VS WADE SHOULD BE ABOLISHED”. THAT IS MUCH STRONGER THAN SAY A CANDIDATE THAT SAYS “I PERSONALLY WOULD NOT ENDORSE ABORTION but WOULD PROTECT A WOMEN’S RIGHT TO CHOOSE THAT FOR HERSELF. WITH OUT THAT CONTINUAL RIGHT, WOMEN WILL REMAIN UNEQUAL AND BECOME SECOND CLASS CITIZENS ONCE AGAIN.
SO,IN THE RON PAUL WORLD, EVERYONE GETS GUNS AND THE WOMEN HAVE TO GET A COAT HANGER.
DON’T BE FOOLED BY A REPUBLICAN WHO IS “ONE PERSON FOR ALL PEOPLE” SEARCH DEEPER.
IN CONCLUSION, BESIDES ALL THESE REASONS FOR NOT BEING SEDUCED BY THE ONLY REPUBLICAN THAT IS AGAINST THE WAR, TAKE ANOTHER LOOK AT DENNIS KUCINICH………
OF COURSE, I KNOW THAT THE REPUBLICANS NEED A CANDIDATE WITH SENSE AND REASON………… GOOD LUCK FINDING ONE……..BUT THE DEMOCRATS ALREADY HAVE ONE WHO ALSO IS COMPASONATE AND FAIR AS WELL AND THAT IS
DENISE KUCINICH WHO IS FAR SUPERIOR IN SCOPE AND SUBSTANCE THAN RON PAUL.
