Bloomberg says won’t run for president
By Daniel Trotta
NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg says he cannot win the U.S. presidency and won’t run, the strongest statement to date about his intentions for the 2008 presidential race.
Bloomberg previously had said he had no plans to run, which failed to quiet speculation that he was planning an independent bid for the White House.
In an interview with Dan Rather of HDNet television to be aired on Tuesday, Bloomberg was asked if he was running and if he was going to run for president. He answered “no” to both questions.
He refused to categorically rule out any future run, then added: “The answer is ‘no.’ … If somebody asks me where I stand, I tell them. And that’s not a way to get elected generally. Nobody’s going to elect me president of the United States.”
I was hoping he’d run as I believe he would have really shaken up the establishment regardless of if he won or not. However with him out of the way Ron Paul is now free and clear to run as an independent once the GOP passes him over as the nominee.

Bloomberg _is_ the Establishment. frankly Paul would have a better chance in the General if Bloomberg were running. three Establishment candidates and one RP.
also you Know Paul said he’s not planning to run outside the GOP, though if he does make a strong showing in primaries I don’t see how that could be avoided…then again if he can’t win in a five or six horse race in the primaries with record low turn-out and pathetic opponents what promise would there be in the General?
Down with the Whatever State!

I couldn’t agree more about being disappointed that (I hope it’s really if) Bloomberg doesn’t run. He would have been a good candidate for the Unity ticket, if not some other third party.
I do not, however, share your enthusiasm for Ron Paul, who I still don’t understand the appeal of.

I’m not enthustiastic about Ron Paul. I just think he’s run a really interesting campaign so far. Besides Justin and I have a bet that if Bloomberg didn’t run as an indy then Ron Paul would.

I don’t buy it. I expect Bloomberg to be “drafted” by Unity08.

Is that an official prediction?

No. All official predictions are on my blog.
Besides, we could potentially coopt the Unitoids to vote for Hagel.
It could happen.

An election with Bloomberg running was the only chance Hillary would win in 2008.

I’m really hoping Bloomberg doesn’t run - I doubt he would win (though it is possible, depending on who the other 2 candidates are), he could seriously screw with results in several swing states and throw the election in either direction. If his political strategist is good enough, he could even cherry-pick states where he’s the most likely to swing it in the direction he wants, thus determining the next president via tricks rather than votes.
