Will Gary Kasparov Be President Of Russia?
By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Elections, Russia, The WorldI hope this guy defeats Putin, but the odds are against him.
I love his line about building democracy in Iraq at the expense of building democracy in Russia. I also like how he breaks down Putin’s oil strategy. It makes perfect sense.
Why we haven’t focused more on Russia is beyond me. Well, no, I know why we haven’t. We’ve been focusing on a boondoggle in Iraq. Meanwhile, Russia gets more powerful, is turning back into a police state and could ultimately be a much more formidable opponent than al Qaeda ever will.

The odds aren’t merely against it. Dennis Kucinich has a way better chance of being president of the US than Kasparov does of Russin. Putin has an over 80% approval rating in Russia and not merely economic stability, but growth.

What the hell, Justin? Are you playing Devil’s Advocate today, or what. You post about 2 badly flawed polls & a political newcomer in Russia & make these weird predictions. Yeltsin stands a better chance of winning, & last I heard, he’s dead.

I’ve read that Putin may even prevent him from appearing on the ballot.

And Saddam Hussein had a 99% approval rating. As Casparov put it on Bill Mahr, “How do you know (what the real approval rating is)?” Casparov certainly won’t be elected this time around, considering the obvious dictatorial grip Putin has on power, but don’t assume the people love him. They fear him. If the regime doesn’t kill Casparov first, he could be the guy to bring Russian back from the brink. IF the President were really engaged over their, and not just “looking into Putin’s eyes, and seeing his soul”, we might be able to help.

I say let Russia be Russia. It is not our business what happens there. We only anger them and then they make trouble for us. Putin for better or worse has stabilized that country and it is not doing much better than 10 years ago, and not just because of oil. Better policies have certainly helped. They even have a flat income tax there, something our bozos in Washington are too inept to even consider ( the real secret is too much special interest controlling the country to change the tax code for the good of the country). Now that I think of it, we may be more like Moscow than Moscow in some respects.
