Remember that these polls usually define “likely Republican primary voters” as people who voted in the previous Republican presidential primary. That was 2004 when W was unopposed. So the only people voting in that primary were diehard Bushies, who are the ones most likely to prefer Rudy, Mitt, McCain and Huck.

Also here’s where a few democrats were polling at similar times in the election cycle:

John Kerry, December 2003: 5% (4th place, behind Wesley Clark, tied with Al Sharpton)

Bill Clinton, October 1991: 5% (4th place, behind Doug Wilder and Bob Kerrey)

Michael Dukakis, 1987: 1% (6th place, tied with Bruce Babbitt, behind Sam Nunn)

Oh, there’s definitely movement. Within the past week there have been three 7% finishes in state polls and two 5%-or-better results in nationwide polling. That’s new, and it’s surely more than just statistical fluctuation. But it’s fair to ask whether it’s going to be enough, fast enough. I’m optimistic, especially since many of these polls still reflect results from before all of the publicity that Paul got for his successful November 5 fundraising.
