Drew Carey Hosts Reason.tv Show

Well, how about that? I missed this announcement, but it’s great news. Good to see more people talking about freedom.

In this episode, Carey shines the spotlight on eminent domain laws gone wild. As the site explains…

Officials in National City, a predominantly Hispanic community near San Diego, have pushed to bulldoze a popular athletic center for struggling kids to pave the way for private developers to build new luxury condos.

As tragic and absurd as this may sound, such outrageous affronts to property rights are an almost daily occurrence.

Definitely watch the whole thing. The city leaders’ arguments sound so hollow and false. Ultimately the people lost and rich developers won.

By the way, I tried to embed the video on my site, but it’s too wide. Note to Reason.tv…offer some more choices. :-)

Actually, this is the second one I know of. The other one was about privatized toll lanes on some of the California highways. Sorry I didn’t bookmark or otherwise save it. Not too sure I agree with what he is doing, but the videos reflect fresh thinking about old problems.

As far as using eminent domain for the construction of privately owned projects, I think government has gone too far. I’m glad to hear that in this case, the locals have so far won. But when those condos fill up with not from the neighborhood ricos, they will be complaining about the view of the slums from their picture windows. This win is only temporary.
