Why Huckabee? Why Obama?

Andrew Sullivan nails it…

The key is that the old red-blue, right-left boomer paradigm is fading; Obama offers exhausted Republicans a way out: a Democrat they can vote for. Many do not actually like the party they have become, and want to move forward into a less nasty, cramped and vicious direction. That’s why Huckabee is rising too.

What do they have in common? Huckabee is a conservative whose character appeals to liberals; Obama is a liberal whose temperament appeals to conservatives. Both represent a deep desire to get past the hideous, nasty polarization of the last few years. Obama doesn’t despise conservatives the way Clinton does. Huckabee doesn’t repell Democrats the way Giuliani and Romney do.

Could we see those two in the general election? I have my doubts about Huck’s viability, but it would be an interesting match up.

Strangers things have happened…

Sullivan: Huckabee is a conservative whose character appeals to liberals[...]

I’m not quite convinced about this. There are plenty of liberals who despise GWB for being a Christian conservative, even though Bush has been less a champion of the religious right than a panderer to it. Huckabee, on the other hand, is a more bona fide champion of the religious right than Bush ever was. It occurs to me that if he becomes President, those same liberals are likely to regard him as no better, possibly even worse, than Bush.

As an atheist and scientist, I could never ever vote for someone who doesn’t believe in Evolution. Huckabee is not a viable candidate for any reasonable, rational, intelligent person. That doesn’t mean he won’t get elected, however… (see current President). To me, support of Creationism is a red flag that a person is uneducated, dogmatic, vain, and inflexible. These are not qualities of anyone truly Presidential.

I’m a registered Democrat, but I support Ron Paul. I don’t agree with him 100% but I think the changes he supports really need to be made. And hopefully he won’t manage to get Abortion outlawed before he leaves office. However, if he doesn’t get the Republican nomination, I will seriously consider voting for him as a Libertarian third party candidate. Otherwise, yes, I will take Obama. I really don’t want to have to vote for slick Eddie.

I don’t think Huckabee appeals to liberals AT ALL. He may have more heart than the average GOP candidate, but he’s still a religious fanatic who would run this country from the pulpit - which is a troubling thing for all of us.

Obviously, he DOES appeal to the bible belt rightwing sensibility - in spite of his compassion towards the least amongst us.
