Reading through this "debate" has reinforced the ol' probligo's continuing stance that NZ just does NOT need a FTA with the US. Given this small and non-representative sample of American political outlook and the views expressed one really does have to wonder at the value of FTA's... But that isn't what I wanted to say either.

Seems that the chills of the kind of global trade and economy promoted by the US in the '70s and after, the rationale behind the establishment of World Bank, WTO and OECD - all heavily promoted by the US as the means to that end - is at last starting to bite the bum that started it. A shame perhaps that Reagan is not around to see the full realisation of what he started.

Well, NZ made the move many years back. There is little advantage to FTAs with NZ as most tariffs and other trade barriers have been removed with our highest tariffs now 5%. I support free global trade. "Tis a very good thing.

The removal of trade barriers can only be to our advantage and that gain can only limited by our ability to produce for the markets.

Get with it America. If someone else makes your T's or your cars cheaper than you can, you gotta go for it. Either you make your own as cheap, or you find other things that you can do well.
