bob,

That's precisely what NJ put in its place. In Missouri our governor and some of his fellow Republicans is proposing that the death penalty be expanded to include rapists of children. Since I think that he wants to be GWB when he grows up I assume that this is his first step in remaking the state in Texas' image.

In principle, I'm ambivalent. Like the others on here, I oppose it on the grounds you can't bring an innocent person back to life when you relize you made a mistake. The sentence must be life w/ no chance of parole, though.

Goodonyer NJ.

I find it quite amazing that a nation that promotes and takes great pride in its foundation in Christianity, has maintained a practice that directly conflicts with the Christian principles of the sanctity of life.

Surely if there were a reason for abolishing the death penalty it should be that?

The death penalty is archaic, barbaric, childish and pointless. Just a few of the reasons for abolishing it are:
A life sentence removes a dangerous person from society as effectively as a death sentence, and at lower cost
All defendants are not represented equally. A rich O.J. Simpson walks. A poor, black person represented by a court-appointed lawyer gets sentenced to death when a better lawyer could have gotten him acquitted or the charge reduced
Judges and juries can be wrong
     Prosecutors pursue convictions, not justice
New evidence and forensic techniques can’t free a person if he’s dead
Killing a killer does nothing for a victim’s family; a life sentence provides equal closure
Socially and culturally speaking, it’s time to evolve.

Me too, I agree. Until the systematic unfairness of the death penalty can be addressed and reformed. Too many innocent people have lost their lives for no other reason that being in the wrong place at the wrong time or being the wrong face near or at the scene of a crime. Hundreds if not thousands of innocents have had their lives taken simply because their peers seen no "value" in their existence based largely on institutional classism which is most evident in the unbalanced representation or lack thereof before the justice system.

Money talks and Scooter Libbyies walk.

I have to agree. Murder deserves murder. But by the government is a different issue. The fact that it is so expensive and can never guarantee 100% guilt means we should just sentence people to life without parole. Unless we actually want to live under a state responsible for the murder of innocents.
