The late former Prime Minister of Pakistan was a symbol of hope for some. She will always be remembered for her courage. Her untimely death has been a great loss not only to her country but to the world at large.

For women in general, she was the ultimate symbol of power and beauty. For pro democracy supporters, she was their light house.

May her soul rest in peace.

I canâ€™t believe that she was assassinated by a 15-year-old! What a shock! This is a crazy part of the world, and we are going to have to reassess our handling of such situations. I have spoken with several people from the middle east, and they all say that she was assassinated because it would be a major blow to the Americans. What are we doing wrong?

Change the name of PPP to PFP (Pakistan Family Party), Did any body question what this new joker (Balawal) is going to do? How he is going to run a country? What is his qualification and education? Is there any educated and experience guy in PFP? This Joker (Balawal) is grownup in Dubai with a luxurious life with Pakistanâ€™s looted money. His mother Benazir Bhutto; Queen of Dubai, was a total corrupt, her father, husband and new joker (Balawal) all these people want to loot the country. They have done it in the past; Benazir was given two chances for prime minister. I have seen myself; that only thing she had done was making country bankrupt and anarchy. Her father nationalize the industry in Pakistan in 1970s and broken the backbone of the modern privatization. This family is there to kill this country and all these jokers are happy and healthy because of our uneducated and stupid nation (so called).
I am not trying to support military, in reality military is actually responsible to bring this situation, but now we do not have any option. Only a big and real revelation may fix some problems we have; otherwise, Pakistan is hopeless case.

Jeremy, you describe the conditions (lack of proper security) that invariably led to Benhazir Butto’s early demise. No disagreement from me, there. I even consent that Musharraf isn’t losing any sleep over her death and he might be – to some extent – involved. Still, it’s no secret she was very well aware of the great probability of losing her life and that radical extremists (that are not few) had a hand in her death.

However, I draw the line at your assertion that Musharraf is “America’s appointed dictator.” Now that’s not only unfair, but untrue. America can’t pick the leaders of other countries, but it attempts to work with those that have a semblance of reasonableness.

Elisabetta, I agree with you when you say that there are some muslims that are so radical you must convert to their line of thinking or they will kill you. It’s wrong and these people should be fought by every possible means.

However, it could just as likely be the case that America’s military dictator Musharraf had her assassinated. Bhutto made it publicly known that she was marked for death and Musharraf continually denied Bhutto proper security. So to automatically assume that this was the work of radical Islamists is not fair. I’m sure there will be little to no investigation into who killed Bhutto or why. One thing is certain though–Musharraf isn’t shedding
any tears.

Shed no tears for this terrorist enabler. She was far worse than Musharraff when she was prime minister. Not only was her administration extremely corrupt, she oversaw the deliberate ethnic cleansing of over 300,000 Pandit Hindus from Kashmir. I find this a very stark example of the options we face in the middle east. Do we continue to stand with those who, like Bhutto, stand for Democracy (not just in Pakistan, but in Iraq and Afghanistan), or do we surrender to her killers out of fear of the ensuing crisis and chaos? To the leading crop of today’s Democrats, surrending to the killers has long been their chosen path.

Indeed. She, much like Nawaz Sharif have very checkered pasts. The trouble now is not only how Musharraf responds to this crisis, but also whether her Pakistan People’s Party can bounce back from this and win the upcoming elections, and more importantly who they will choose as her successor. If her party collapses, as she was the glue that held it together, then Nawaz Sharif’s party would benefit by using her murder as a rallying cry to topple Musharraf. Sharif was a close ally of the Taliban prior to his ouster by Musharraf and both have a very difficult relationship.

Add to this what is going on in Balochistan and the problems in Pakistan begin to mount exponentially.

Nobody seems to be asking, “what are the root causes of this terrorist act?” What did Bhutto do to the Muslim world to inspire such frustration and despair? Is Karl Rove somehow involved? If Israel wasn’t oppressing Palestinians, this never would have happenned.
