The key would seem to me to be to invert the Republican formula. "As they step up, we'll step down" is just a polite way of asking the Iraqis to never step up. "Unless they step up, we'll step down" is much more sane all around.

There is no doubt that a gradual, measured pullout is the best political strategy...note the word political.

The other question is how many more American soldiers must die or be injured just so we politically withdraw? How many more sacrifices must the families of these soldiers endure because a deceitful president and administration launched us into a war we should never have been in?

Now, of course, if the US pulls outs it could result in an upswing in violence...I don't doubt that. Will that number be greater if the US withdraws quickly or slowly? My gut says the number will be greater.

How do we balance those numbers?

Do we balance those numbers?

We know that the populace at large does not care a whit about the wholesale slaughter of innocents....darfur, sierra leone, congo, sudan, and yes, the Kurds in Iraq...the list is frighteningly long.

The next president has some hard decisions to make--whoever it is, at least it will not be the current group that seems incapable of making any correct decisions.
