Clinton Leads Obama In California

Politico has the numbers:

Clinton won the support of 49 percent of those polled by telephone by Opinion Research Corp. Jan. 23-27, a period that covered several days in advance of the South Carolina Democratic primary and one day afterward.

Obama came in second place, with 32 percent to John Edwards’ 14 percent.

The poll surveyed 690 likely Democratic primary voters, and the margin of error was plus or minus 4 percentage points.

The results are similar to a Politico/CNN/Los Angeles Times poll taken Jan. 11-13, in which Clinton led 47 percent to 31 percent, with Edwards claiming 10 percent.Obama came in second place with 32 percent to 14 percent for John Edwards.

And perhaps most promising for the Clinton campaign, the new poll found that only 4 percent of likely Democratic primary voters had not made up their minds.

It’ll be difficult for Obama to win the Latino vote from Hillary, but Kennedy’s endorsement today could really help him swing it back the other way. That and Edwards pulling out of the race and putting his support behind Obama could help too, but I doubt that’ll happen now. John looks like he wants to play kingmaker (or queenmaker if you like), and the only way to do that effectively is to stay in it and keep winning delegates.

  1. John Hartford Says:

The belief that Kennedy is some sort of talisman that is going to change the basic trajectory of this race is touching but not very realistic. Tell me Donklephant would you change your vote because Ted told you to? It might have a bit of benefit at the margins but that’s it. I’d pay much closer attention to what comes out of FL today. If her basic coalition holds together after SC and the slavish press he’s been getting for weeks I’d say she’s going to have a great day next Tuesday.

No, Kennedy doesn’t hold sway over my vote, but if I were a betting man I’d say that this will pull another 5% or so toward Barack in the bigger, liberal states. Also, this could swing Mass toward Barack, and Hillary had a massive lead there. It would be a big story if that happens.

Concerning Florida, everybody agreed last summer that it didn’t count. She’ll try to make it count, and that just makes her look desperate. It’s not a smart move.
