New Sins

By Alan Stewart Carl | Related entries in Religion

The Roman Catholic church has announced the new sins of our modern age. So, are you a sinner?

You are if you defile the environment. And you are if you support or engage in genetic engineering such as embryonic stem cell research. There’s a nice symmetry there. Sanctity of the Earth and sanctity of life. Of course, if you’re not Roman Catholic, you’re not obligated to conform to their standards of morality. Still, nice to see both major American political parties can point to the other as sinful. I’d hate for one party to have a monopoly on evil.

And I’m sure the church will think globally while also acting locally.

So I guess it’s safe to assume that the church will immediately desist with all that air-polluting incense burning. And I’m eagerly awaiting their guidance on alternatives to Christmas lights, since they’ll obviously have to be right out. Unless of course they’re solar-powered.

Boy the carbon footprint for the burning of Christmas lights is sure to be a big scandal come next December.

I can’t think of another institution that has managed to survive for nearly 2000 years – mostly on donations – and to have had such an unbelievable impact on human history. You have to hand it to he Catholic Church – it is consistent with it’s pro-life message. Fortunately they have all those buildings that were built long before the invention of electricity.

I guess I’m not sure what is new here, except maybe in giving certain sinful actions “brand names,” so to speak. Of course, I went to high school at a Catholic seminary where we got a bit more of the theology than your average Catholic gets, especially these days. Maybe the Vatican brought in some consultants who found the new sins scored real high with their target demographic.

Their head demographer thinks it all sounds swell.
