McCain’s Interesting Campaign Plan
By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, McCain, Republicans
This could be REALLY smart or REALLY dumb.
Sen. John McCain’s election planners are preparing to unveil a radically decentralized campaign structure over the next few months.Instead of funneling authority through a few central figures at campaign headquarters in Arlington, VA, plans call for it to be dispersed to up to ten “regional campaign managers” –spread at satellite campaign offices throughout the country, according to two Republicans briefed on the plans.
The 10 different campaign offices will run, in essence, 10 different campaigns, region-specific and constituent-specific, tailorable to fit around McCain’s unique coalition.
There’s no doubt there’s a certain genius in this thinking. If the regional campaigns understand what messages their region wants to hear, this increased autonomy may allow them to respond a lot quicker to opportunities.
But will they really be able to control a consistent message with a structure like this? “10 different campaigns” have the potential to go sideways really quick. Again, I have my doubts.
I wonder what Soren Dayton thinks.
