I think I said it was a great speech. I think I said he'd be a great president after serving as VP. I'll go further - he'll be a great vice president. I think I should get some props for that.

BTW - the mists of time thinned and I had a clear view into the future during the speech today. I am gearing up for another bold "I Told You So" prediction. Not quite ready to pull the trigger on this yet - but a sneak preview for some of my favorite commenters - Barack pulls out and accepts the VP slot in a unity ticket before Pennsylvania.

Nice try. He sat there for TWENTY YEARS and did not engage with the pastor regarding his hateful speech, his ongoing PROMOTION OF racial discord and anti-Americanism. TWENTY YEARS, and not once does he have words or dialogue with the pastor on this? TWENTY YEARS? This man marries him, baptizes his children, and not once did he speak out? He borrows the pastor's speeches for his book titles, and not once does he have this conversation with him? It certainly wasn't a lack of opportunity, so a guess that it was a lack of motivation and conviction seems reasonable.

Until, of course, it became an inconvenient embarrassment to him on the election trail. THEN we have motivation at least.

I did not say he should stand up and argue with the pastor in the middle of services, so thank you very much for that bullshit hyperbole.

Walk out? Hell, I certainly have. I've conspicuously walked out on hate speech in churches and meetings on many occasions. They may have a right to speak, but they have no right to my acquiescent attention when they overtly promote bigotry, whether it's against gays or Jews or blacks or whites or women or whatever. And they won't get it.

But I'm not Obama. I actually believe that when it's called for, you walk the walk, not just sit there quietly and later (after it's brought up in public and you can't evade it) talk the talk. He had TWENTY YEARS to walk the walk, to speak up and speak out, and instead he sat there, getting in his face time.

But he sure do talk purty.

When push came to shove, Obama sat in the pews and did not move. He listened–after he didn’t listen–and said nothing in return.

So in your opinion people ought to stand up in church and fight with their pastor, or else walk out every time they don't agree? Well, we know you're not much of a church guy Tully, so I guess your opinion makes sense.

An excellent orator. Why, I could faintly hear the strains of The Battle Hymn of the Republic welling up in the background as he built to a crescendo!

When push came to shove, Obama sat in the pews and did not move. He listened--after he didn't listen--and said nothing in return. Not until he was cornered by the record did he stand up at all.

But he sure do talk pretty. It was almost as moving as Otter's speech in Animal House, where he leads the whole frat out of the hearing after accusing the board of reviling the entire American system...in fact, it's almost a template.

"The issue here is not whether we broke a few rules, or took a few liberties with our female party guests - we did."

Heh.

Ah, the great hypocrisy marches on. Bush and McCain can be advised by truly insane (and white!) evangelicals who desire war in the Middle East to hasten the Rapture, but Obama goes to church where his pastor is angry (and black!) and his views are SOOOOOO newsworthy and by the WAY, he's BLACK!!! Where are the condemnation for insane white preachers? Where? Republicans have many, many, white evangelicals who say distasteful insane bullshit from their pulpits. What about Catholic priests? Shall we go after every one of them if they make a political faux pas? Where was all the outrage and the knowing shaking of heads then?

I don't know where people get this idea that Obama is easily led and swayed and if he went to this church for 20 years, he must be shouting Kill Whitey every day and night. No one went after Kerry for being Catholic and pro abortion, and no one has gone after Bush for meeting with the Pope or being part of a "born again Church." But if the religious figure at your side is angry? AND black? That's a news story!! Clearly, Obama is not yet ready to be president because HE KNOWS ANGRY BLACK PEOPLE!!

Again, if all parties involved were white, this wouldn't matter. Wright could say anything, and it wouldn't be newsworthy. But the blackness is key.

Then Obama comes off sounding like a reasonable, sane adult American and makes another (!) landmark speech, and that is evidence he's "not ready." Too funny.

Spoken as two folks who have already decided they have no intention of voting for the guy, and seeking to spin this against him.

I won't actually be that be surprised if either of you turns out to be right. But I hope people are willing to take up the challenge that he issued, instead of responding with the same old whining that I see from you two.

Dos, your comment in particular shows that you're not the sort of person ready to take up this sort of challenge. Like you yourself said, you're not interested in where Obama is coming from. You're not interested in understanding. You just want to throw someone under the bus. Your type of response is the sort that helps prevent change. You are married to continuing stalemate until the generation of Wright and Ferraro dies off. Maybe that's what it will take.

Yeah, he's not going to be president this time around. Wright effectively killed the dream and he would have needed to cleave that cancer off clean, which he couldn't do politically. He did what he could, but at the end of the day,

I didn't want to hear shit about his family. I wanted to hear -- "this guy is a nut, his views are insane, he does not represent a credible element of the black community and I apologize for associating with him for long as I did. Live and learn."

I got more of - "this is my family, this little slip doesn't really reflect him and this is a legitimate strain of the thought in the black community....oh, and btw, can't we all just get along."

He's done and, if he's not, I think I'll start my own 527, call it "Sins of the Father dot Org." You are about to see a lot of Rev. Wright.

I watched it. A truly great speech. Right up there with his 2004 Convention Keynote speech. When I watched the speech in 2004, I remember thinking - "This man will be president someday.". Watching his speech today, I found myself thinking - "He will be a great president - in 2017 -after four or eight years of seasoning as VP."
