Quote Of The Day

“Only a fool or a fraud sentimentalizes the merciless reality of war.”
- A phrase from John McCain’s foreign policy speech today, which some say is a direct response to Bush’s recent statements romanticizing war.

Here’s more from the speech…

“Our great power does not mean we can do whatever we want whenever we want, nor should we assume we have all the wisdom and knowledge necessary to succeed,” the Republican said in prepared remarks a few days after returning from the Middle East and Europe. “We need to listen to the views and respect the collective will of our democratic allies.”

See, this is what I want to be hearing from the GOP candidate. Not because it slams Bush, but because it gives me a reason to think that McCain’s foreign policy stance will be a departure from the arrogance and rhetoric that has left us in a worse position than before 9/11. This would also appear to put the lie to Josh Marshall’s position that McCain is nothing more than a tactical warrior, and thus unfit to be the POTUS.

But…will he be equally as forceful in the coming months? Will he continue to speak out like this? Because that will be the true test. If these rebukes continue, it could mean a lot to swing voters who dislike Bush, but don’t trust Obama or Clinton’s foreign policy experience.

We shall see…

Sounds nice, but for the moment, color me skeptical.

    Anyone remember this

Wow. Head spinning…don’t know what to do. This is a welcome departure from “Bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran.” Do you think he’s coming back from crazy baseland since securing the nomination? I sure hope so, but like DougL am still skeptical. I’ll be watching.

Remember Bush campaigned on a “stop policing the world” platform, and see where that got us? Actions speak louder than words.
