He stopped Maliki from disarming him and his followers when they tried to marginalize them before the elections. Al-Sadr wants to save his fighters for another day. They now know they can take on the national army and come out of it just fine. Plus they now know the Iraqi Army's capabilities and can start making plans for the next round.
