McCain Would Not Attend Opening Ceremonies

Yet another sign he would have a much more nuanced worldview of the world? Of course, it’s not saying that much when you compare it to somebody who characterizes the Olympics as just “a sporting event.” Bush has set the bar pretty low on expectations for the next Republican candidate’s decision making capabilities, but John still gets credit, and so here it is.
Senator John McCain said today that he would not attend the opening ceremonies at the Olympics, barring significant changes in China’s behavior, if he were president.During an appearance on ABC’s “The View,” Whoopi Goldberg asked the presumptive Republican nominee whether he would attend the ceremonies.
“Unless they change something pretty quickly, I would not go to the opening ceremonies,” Mr. McCain said.
Again, well done John.

The moral being in me says John McCain made the right call here.
The pragmatist wonders how long the PRC’s memory is for diplomatic slights such as this, and how much harder it will be for a McCain administration to deal with Beijing as a result.

The politicization of sports is inevitable. It’s always been there, really.
The presidents… the prime ministers… the senators… the legislators… what have they done, really?
Were they the ones getting up at 5am every morning to go swim laps for two hours? Most every day for the past 10 years?
Were they the ones who stayed at the gymnastics center two hours after school, withstanding falls, bruises, twists, sprains?
Were they the ones adhering to strict diets, shunning soft drinks, candy, McDonalds’s, television, video games, and all the other “kid stuff?”
Nancy Pelosi recently “suggested” (more like “demanded”) that our athletes not march in the opening ceremonies. Who the frack does she think she is, telling these young people, who have sacrificed much, that they can’t take place in a once-in-a-lifetime event?
The decision of whether or not to march in the opening ceremonies should be left to the athletes.
If even one little gymnast, cyclist, weightlifter, wrestler, or marksman chooses to march in the opening c3remonies, waving the “Stars & Stripes”… then it is only fitting that our president be there to show support and appreciation.
