SurveyUSA: Hillary Closes To Within 5 In North Carolina

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Democrats, Hillary, North Carolina, Polls

It’s Obama/Clinton, 49/44.
The common trend in all of these North Carolina polls is Clinton is closing the gap. By how much we can’t be sure, but this doesn’t look like it’s going to be the big win that Obama had hoped he would get.
From the poll:
In SurveyUSA last four polls, over the past two months, [...]

Which is still a tie, but it mirrors what happened 10 days ago when Hillary took a brief 1 point lead and then Obama climbed back above 50%.

The details…

Obama Disowns Wright

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Race, Religion

After yesterday’s performance by the reverend, you knew it had to be coming. And while this isn’t the same as throwing Wright under the bus, it does suggest that Obama understands how far off the reservation his former pastor’s views are.
From TPM comes this from Obama:
The person I saw yesterday was not the person that [...]

And Clinton’s gains in Pennsylvania continue to dwindle.
First, a key endorsement from Kentucky congressman Ben Chandler…
Chandler will announce his support for Obama at a midday news conference in downtown Louisville. Chandler represents a central Kentucky district and carries one of the most famous names in Kentucky politics.

Indiana Delegates Likely To Split Between Obama, Clinton

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Democrats, Hillary, Indiana

That’s the math from CQ Politics:
There are 72 pledged delegates at stake in the Indiana primary, along with 13 of those officially unpledged party leaders and elected officials known as “superdelegates.” Of those 72 pledged delegates, 47 are allocated among the state’s nine congressional districts and will be apportioned between Clinton and Obama based on [...]

She Needs 69% Of Remaining Pledged Delegates

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Democrats, Hillary, Super Delegates!!!

Yet another story that proves Pennsylvania meant a lot to the media, but little to the math.
Charlie Cook breaks it down…
Almost half of the delegate advantage she netted against Obama in Pennsylvania was offset by losses of superdelegates the same week. Colby College political scientist and delegate selection expert Anthony Corrado estimates that Clinton [...]

Guantanamo Prosecutor Reveals War Tribunals Politicized

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Bush, Cheney, Elections, Law, Rove, The War On Terrorism, al Qaeda

As if this any surprise, but seriously…how many of these stories will we have to endure? And I have to think that even more will be coming out after Bush and company leave office.
From Reuters:
The former chief prosecutor for the Guantanamo war crimes tribunals testified on Monday that the tribunals were tainted by political influence [...]

Republicans Losing Party ID Fight

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Bush, Democrats, Republicans

Ambinder thinks it’s Bush’s doing:
A potential objection: that old canard, that young people are liberal and become more conservative? The historical data doesn’t support it. When Bill Clinton was elected, a plurality of people under 30 identified themselves as Republicans. Same thing when Ronald Reagan was elected.
Politically, today’s cohort of 18-to-29 year olds came [...]

He spoke about his pastor problems today:
“I think people will understand that I am not perfect and that there are going to be folks in my past like Rev. Wright that may cause them some concern but that ultimately my 20 years of service and the values that I’ve written about and spoken about and [...]

And that means another superdelegate for Obama.
From NY Times:
Sen. Barack Obama officially pulled ahead today in the scramble for endorsements from colleagues in the U.S. Senate, thanks to Sen. Jeff Bingaman of New Mexico.

Rove Advises Obama

By Alan Stewart Carl | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Rove

O.k., not in an official capacity. But The Architect has seen fit to offer Barack Obama advice as to how to turn around his campaign and start appealing to more than just the so-called white wine sippers and college students. He has six suggestions which I’ve abbreviated here:
1. Update and reinvigorate your stump speech.
2. When [...]

Buffett Says Recession Could Be Bad

Warren Buffett knows a thing or two about money, so when he says we’re entering a bad recession, there’s reason to pay attention. Buffett said:

One thing’s for sure…whoever is the Dem nominee in the Fall (coughObamacough), they’ll have a lot of motivated Dems behind them.

Yes, High Oil Prices Are Directly Related To Weak Dollar

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Bush, Economy, Energy, Money

This is one of those things that should be obvious, but it takes a guy from OPEC to state it outright that we can actually have a say in how much we pay for oil.

Gallup: Obama Leads By 1, Still Statistically Tied

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Democrats, Hillary, Polls

For the 3rd day in a row, they’re locked up.
Of note, her post-PA momentum did not give her any sort of national lead, which suggests that there’s a bit of a ceiling in these numbers. Obama can’t crack 51% and Hillary can’t really crack 47%.

The details…
The race has been stable at a virtual dead [...]
