McCain Planning Climate Change Tour
By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Economy, Energy, Environment, McCainOne bit of good “moderate” news that’s going to come out of the 2008 campaign, climate change is at the forefront of both agendas.
“John McCain is going to be doing more of these themed tours of America, and one of them is going to be on energy and global climate change. It could get him into trouble with Republicans, of course, and with the base, who don’t think there is much climate change going on, but it is something that he’s very passionate about and he’s going to be talking about it.”
Let’s just hope both agendas have realistic solutions…because it not only has to do with helping our planet, but also our security situation due to our dependence on foreign oil and being at the economic forefront of the next great Green Revolution age.

The big question is whether or not McCain would really be able to stand up to the immense pressure the rest of the Republican Party would put on him to back down and find a way to just look like he’s doing something while in reality sticking to the same old business as usual approach.

McCain traveling the country, spreading more hot air, isn’t going to help the environment. As for energy, if he gets on the wrong side of the oil and gas powers that be, they will kill his presidential chances as surely as if he was Dennis Kucinich.
Most likely the fix is already in, with McCain or his people having reassured Big Oil this will all just be for show, so he can get elected.
This would be the same as George W. Bush in 2000 going around the country saying he would be a uniter, not a divider, and that he didn’t believe in using force except as a last resort, didn’t believe in nation building . . . yada, yada, yada.

First off, I don’t think either of you are giving him enough credit.
This has been a big part of his platform and he ran on it in the primary season. So I’m giving credit where credit is due, and he deserves quite a bit for speaking out about it in a very unfriendly environment. And the fact that he won the nomination despite of that position could speak to Republican’s receptiveness of a “new way.”
Second, to S.W.’s point…
I don’t see these as the same things. McCain is talking about a specific policy position and Bush could have meant anything about being a uniter. The two things aren’t necessarily comparable, but I definitely appreciate the hesitation after the last 8 years.
Ultimately, if he does win POTUS, we’ll see if he was all talk. My gut tells me he’s sincere about this because he understands how we have to ween ourselves off of foreign oil, and the only way to do that is to massively invest in green collar jobs stateside.
