Republican Leader Decries GOP’s Direction
By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Bush, Democrats, RepublicansThere are no words minced here:
A former House GOP leader is calling this year’s political atmosphere “the worst since Watergate and is far more toxic than the fall of 2006,” citing “deep seeded (sic) antipathy toward the president.” [...]We are hearing a lot today from Republicans and their concern about their “brand,” and Davis takes it to another level in his memo; “a congressional GOP brand tied to George Bush is struggling”; “…deep seeded antipathy toward the president, the war, gas prices, the economy, foreclosures and, in some areas, the underlying cultural differences that continue to brand our party.”
And the kicker, “the Republican brand is in the trash can…if we were dog food, they would take us off the shelf.”
So far they’ve already lost 3 special elections in VERY red districts, and they’re starting to get the hint how vulnerable they really are.
Long story short, the Republicans are going to have to jettison the Bush years as quickly as possible or face a slaughter in the fall. And I’m talking about publicly distancing themselves from the president’s direction and staying as far away from him as possible. This will piss off a small % of the GOP’s base, but it’s the only way to scrape back some of the independents who are abandoning them in droves.

Well, given that they just did an event to show their solidarity with the President I think it’s probably already too late to try to move away from him for the Republican members of the House.

I notice Davis leaves out six years of abdication of the responsibility to do oversight, eight years of incompetence, secrecy, deceit, fearmongering, trampling the Constitution, subverting federal agencies and their mission, putting political advantage ahead of everything, Robinhood in reverse policies, outrageous dirty tricks and rampant corruption.
Sometimes the people are slow to catch on, but they eventually do catch on. Running from Bush, Cheney and the rest at this late date is as lame, and is likely to be as ineffective, as all those SS officers and troops at Nuremburg in 1945 claiming they had no idea, that they had just followed orders.
