No. The principle is consistent, or it’s not a principle at all. If McCain has said he won’t do it again, it’s not because it’s out of bounds. (He may however think it’s of dubious net value, as being liable to offend some swing voters.)

If only Dems and their supporters didn’t keep making that same mistake…but they do. MoveOn using Brit soldiers in their commercials claimed as Americans, for example. The DNC website that used the Canadian soldier used him in a push-post involving OUR troops held up as as a totem…if you’re going to do that you should really really actually have some vague notion of what our own troops look like.

Symptomatic. And stupid.

Now people…come on. This is Petraeus. Nobody thinks this is a bit different? And besides, McCain’s camp has already said they won’t do it again, so they obviously realize this was a misfire.

One last thing to Jimmy…so somehow a misfire by a web designer is the same as McCain deliberately using the guy who’s running things over in Iraq to raise money? Huh?

If McCain used Canadian officers in their campaign ads and called them Americans, the way the Democrats have done, then it would be OK.

Enabling the Paulbots, Justin? They are amusing.

McCain’s usage is in-bounds, the same as any candidate’s use of pictures with troops is.

Now, if Petraeus himself made any public endorsement, he should get OFFICIALLY slapped upside the head and disciplined for it. As a serving officer he is not permitted to make political endorsements. Period. From the lowest private to the highest general, that rule applies.

Why would you think he would lean towards Republicans? You think soldiers like fighting in wars and dying? Although it is true that Iraq helped propel him into the national political stage and onto all of Americans’ minds (dont be surprised if he runs for pres in the future), why did the majority of former and active service members support Ron Paul, who is an ardent oppponent of the Iraq war?
