Rasmussen: McCain Up By 9 In…Texas?

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Democrats, Independents, McCain, Polls, Republicans, Texas

McCain – 48%
Obama – 39%
I don’t think anybody believes that Texas can turn blue this election cycle, but last month McCain was leading by 14, and the fact that we’re not seeing single digits is definitely unexpected.
How has Obama made up ground in this solidly red state?

There’s finally some movement in this poll after three straight days with the exact same result. However, Obama’s leads without leaners included is still at 7, which is where it was yesterday.

How Reliable Are The Latest Swing State Polls?

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Democrats, McCain, Polls, Republicans, Video

Charlie Cook weighs in, and he’s not impressed.

Now hold on…out of 100, he’d disregard between 90 to 95 of them?
Listen, I get why he thinks that these state polls aren’t as accurate, but to dismiss polling institutions like SurveyUSA, Quinnipiac and Public Policy Polling as crappy local polling companies just trying to get some attention, [...]

Unity Between Obama And Clinton?

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Democrats, Hillary, Video

It seems like.
First her speech…which was gracious, kind and exactly what Obama needed…

Then his speech…which was deferential, magnanimous and exactly what Hillary needed…

So what now? The negotiations of course!
No doubt he’s going to help her try and retire some of the debt she still has. Word is she’ll eat the money she loaned her [...]

Lets play Obamamann Oddball – Part Deux!

By mw | Related entries in Barack, Civil Liberties, Constitution, Democrats, Liberalism, Partisan Hacks

On Wednesday Olbermann completed a pair of truly jaw-dropping contradictory broadcasts on the issue of FISA, telecom immunity, and of course, Obama’s support for same. Glenn Greenwald called him on it in his column Thursday and kicked off a left field food fight in the process.

Since Senator McCain is in Ohio this week, the scuttlebutt is focused on former Ohio Representative Rob Portman – a respected Conservative whose economic experience and service for both Bushes has earned him many Capitol Hill cheerleaders.
Is he the yin to McCain’s yang?

Meanwhile, In Afghanistan…

Given our lack of attention to this region, is it much of a surprise that the former regime is getting stronger?
A new Pentagon report says the Taliban has regrouped after its initial fall from power in Afghanistan. The new report offers a rather dim view of progress in the nearly 7-year-old war, declaring that the [...]

Schwarzenegger On Opening Up Off Shore Drilling

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Economy, Energy, McCain, Oil

It doesn’t get more direct than this…
“Anyone who tells you this will lower our gas prices anytime soon is blowing smoke.”
However, Arnold wanted to make sure that McCain doesn’t get stung for this…
Schwarzenegger’s press spokesman Aaron McLear called me a short while ago to stress that this comment was NOT directed at Crist or McCain, [...]

Well, looks like after a couple of national polls showing big time leads, we might be settling back down to reality. Because this latest from TIME shows results very similar to Gallup and Rasmussen.
Some key findings…
First, the race is closer when leaners are included…
When undecided voters leaning towards Obama and McCain [...]

FISA Opponents Create Group On Obama’s Web Site

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Law, Technology

Some may see this as a negative, but one benefit to Obama having social networking available for his supporters is it gives people an opportunity to state their opposition. Obama probably won’t change his position, but at least people feel that they have a voice, and can find likeminded people to organize and spread the [...]

Gallup: McCain, Obama Tied For 3rd Straight Day

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Democrats, Independents, McCain, Polls, Republicans

Interesting that both Gallup and Rasmussen have shown a deadlocked race for 3 straight days.

The details about the deadlock:
From a broader perspective, there has been little major change in the race for the entire month, with Obama either tying McCain or leading the race by a slim margin throughout June.
This relative stability is not [...]

A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.

And even among people who don’t [...]

A Centrist Laments

Pete Abel is starting to get depressed about the fall election…and in particular a certain post-partisan politician…
In February, even as McCain disappointed, Obama thrilled. Sure, I detested his centralized big-government ideas, but his strength of character, his intelligence, and his flexibility seemed just the right antidote to eight years of lack of character, questionable intelligence, [...]

Proposed Debate Formats Eschew Traditional Lectern

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Debates, Democrats, McCain, Republicans

I’d be in favor of something along these following lines, although I’d like to see more open format town halls.
From McClatchy…
The Commission on Presidential Debates proposed the less formal, more conversational talk-show format for two of three 90-minute debates it’s seeking this fall. The third debate would be a town hall-style session in which the [...]
