John Edwards’ Official Statement On 2006 Infidelity

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Edwards, History

As the title states, he’s claiming it happened in 2006, so one could argue it wasn’t as sleazy since it wasn’t during the campaign season or while Elizabeth had cancer. Still, why was this woman hired to work on his primary campaign?

In any event, I think it’s curtains for his political career.

In 2006, I made a serious error in judgment and conducted myself in a way that was disloyal to my family and to my core beliefs. I recognized my mistake and I told my wife that I had a liaison with another woman, and I asked for her forgiveness. Although I was honest in every painful detail with my family, I did not tell the public. When a supermarket tabloid told a version of the story, I used the fact that the story contained many falsities to deny it. But being 99% honest is no longer enough.

I was and am ashamed of my conduct and choices, and I had hoped that it would never become public. With my family, I took responsibility for my actions in 2006 and today I take full responsibility publicly. But that misconduct took place for a short period in 2006. It ended then. I am and have been willing to take any test necessary to establish the fact that I am not the father of any baby, and I am truly hopeful that a test will be done so this fact can be definitively established. I only know that the apparent father has said publicly that he is the father of the baby. I also have not been engaged in any activity of any description that requested, agreed to or supported payments of any kind to the woman or to the apparent father of the baby.

It is inadequate to say to the people who believed in me that I am sorry, as it is inadequate to say to the people who love me that I am sorry. In the course of several campaigns, I started to believe that I was special and became increasingly egocentric and narcissistic. If you want to beat me up – feel free. You cannot beat me up more than I have already beaten up myself. I have been stripped bare and will now work with everything I have to help my family and others who need my help.

I have given a complete interview on this matter and having done so, will have nothing more to say.

Well John, good luck with not trying to talk about it anymore. Because it’ll be what everybody wants to talk about from here on out.

The end of John Edwards, I don’t thinks so; he is too craven. I would hope he would dedicate all his time to his family. I suppose their private affairs are none of our business. Newt, Foley, L. Craig, Livingston, Vitter, Spitzer, McGrevey, Packwood, Clinton – there is a long list of public people with personal failings. I am not put off by the act or the lying (What do they have to lose at that point?), and as a general rule, I don’t think adultery should be a disqualifier for office. What is repellent to me is the hypocrisy, the cravenness that they hold on to power after being caught, and the humiliation their spouses have to endure when used as props when they make public admissions. They are self-absorbed malignant narcissists. Bob Packwood ran for reelection. Bob Livingston did it right; he got caught and resigned in hours. I did notice McCain gave a firm no comment to an Edwards affair.

Why should it be the end of his career? John McCain cheated on his first wife, possibly Cindy as well. His career seems fine.

Because McCain’s resume is long and distinguished, and McCain has established enormous credibility. Edwards didn’t do much, if anything, in the Senate. He’s pretty much a one-note politician. I think his “do-gooder” image was all he had, and this revelation kills it.

IS IT HONESTLY OUR BUSINESS IF OTHER PEOPLE SLEEP WITH SOMEONE OTHER THAN SPOUSE? I PERSONALLY BELIEVE THAT IS BETWEEN THE COUPLE AND GOD. DO YOU REALLY THINK THE ONE WHO HAS BEEN CHEATED ON WANTS THE WORLD TO KNOW.THERE IS A BETTER CHANCE THINGS CAN BE WORKED OUT IF WE STAY OUT OF IT!!!! GOOD LUCK,MR. & MRS.EDWARDS, KEEP THE FAITH.
