Romney. And screw the elitist meme. We haven’t elected an “everyman” since Andrew Jackson. Americans want a leader, someone who at the end of things, has to be able to make decisions that the average person can’t or won’t. As long as they don’t come off as an egotistical snob, they’ll be fine.

There’s a part of me thinking that McCain will pick Lieberman after all simply because he’s stubborn enough to do the one thing everyone is telling him not to do.

It would, of course, be a monumentally stupid choice likely to throw the Republican National Convention into chaos and, most likely would doom McCain’s chances of winning.

It has to be Romney. Here’s why. He’s really the only one who is a good answer to the question “who leads the ticket if John McCain’s stamina and/or health fails during the arduous fall campaign?”

John McCain is a patriot, a war hero, an experienced senator, a hawkish foreign policy stalwart, someone who has departed from party orthodoxy when he thought it was for the good of the country. God bless him.

And he’s pretty old. He has obviously, to my eyes, lost a step. His vigor has diminished substantially in the past 8 years, to the point where just by raising his voice he risks calling attention to this lack. McCain can’t afford an unknown quantity, and he certainly can’t afford a democrat on the ticket. What if he has a stroke? Will Joe Lieberman be the GOP nominee for President? Come on now.

Last night some of the talking heads were throwing out Kay Bailey Hutchinson as a dark horse choice. I don’t think that would be a wise choice, based on his need to bring in someone who has a clue about the economy. It’s still hard for me to imagine McCain gritting his teeth and picking Romney, but he does have the fiscal know-how McCain needs.

I tend to think it is going to be Romney. When deciding who gets the nod be have to take into account the GOP mindset. That mindset is all about getting in line. Romney has certainly done that. He was the runner up in the primary who got out of the way for the eventual nominee. He sucked it up and backed a guy he loathes. He has been out there selling the same guy. He adds possible bump in michigan. he might have some economic credibility in a time when the economy is a major worry. Romney is unafraid to pander and has no qualms about selling out. It just makes too much sense.
