Tax cuts for toasters!
By Nick Ragone | Related entries in NewsWe know that McCain has made serious inroads to working women the past two weeks — every poll bears that out. And we know that Team Obama wants to win them back.
Their solution: Tax cuts for toasters!
Broadway Joe Biden made that very pitch to Meredith Viera of the Today Show this morning. The money quote (from politico.com): Our tax plan would take that tax cut [and give to] the very people who desperately need it to stay in their homes, to buy food, to take care of the gas, to fill up their tank, to be able to go out and buy a toaster, to employ people.”
I know my mom will be happy. She’s been eyeing a new toaster for quite some time. To the more serious issue of raising taxes (again from Politico), Biden revealed that he does, in fact, live in a parallel universe:
VIEIRA: “Senator, you and Senator Obama are calling for tax increases on the wealthy. And there are many economists who say that that would hurt the economy even more.â€
BIDEN: “I don’t know any economists who are saying that.â€
Really Diamond Joe? You don’t know any who are saying that? What do you read when you’re Amtraking it back to Delaware?

Please see the number of _reputable_ economists listed here. Not to say there aren’t any of these economists for McCain, but there are quite a few “economists” (please see all supply-side economists) who hold no credibility (or whose ideas hold no credibility) in academia but get lots of face time because they have plenty of time to show up on talk shows etc. while real economists are plugging away. The only one of McCain’s economic advisers who held genuine academic credibility is Holtz-Eakin, and even his credibility is eroding with the continual pushing of blatantly false facts about McCain’s economic plans.

Greenspan is a pretty good economist, no?
Who’s tax plan did he just denounce?
Listen, I’m much more of a (real) conservative than my support for obama would imply, but isn’t the fallout of the 80′s GOP economic theory (AIG, MLynch, countrywide, etc) a leading indicator of another 4 years of tax cuts on the wealthy?

I can always tell Nick Ragone’s post without checking for an author’s name. He is the only partisan trivial poster on an otherwise good site.

Barack Obama will increase taxes on the Toaster manufacturers, so that they will be forced to move their factories overseas, upon which they will be taxed even more, so in the end the corporate headquarters hill move to Dubai.

By saying “Some economists” she can get by with a quick snark instead of actually listing those economists and checking on the credentials of said economists (i.e. who they’re endorsing and why).
You can’t just say “Some X think that X is bad” and not be able to back it up. Otherwise the other person (Biden, McCain, whomever) will just say “I don’t know any who say that.”
No details, no substance :(
