Rather than an outright lie, why not something more like this?

John: Dave?

Dave: Good afternoon, Senator McCain. We’re certainly looking forward to–

John: Dave, I can’t be there tonight.

Dave: What…???

John: I can’t be there tonight. As you may have heard, I’ve called for a postponement of Friday’s debate. President Bush has request that I, along with Senator Obama and other legislators, meet with him at the White House tomorrow morning. We’ve also received a call from your colleagues over at “CBS News.” I’m going to do a quick sit-down with Katie Couric before I fly to D.C.

Dave: Boy, this really, really–

John: I know, Dave, and I’m sorry. I would love to do the show on another night. As for tonight, I have a couple of ideas: First, my running mate, Sarah Palin, might be able to step in for me. I mean, when you think about it, that’s what vice presidents are supposed to do, anyway, right? While our campaign folks are double-checking her schedule and flight availability, they’re also trying to get in touch with my good friend Joe Lieberman. He might be able to fill in for me, and with his knowledge and experience, he could certainly address the same kind of questions you have lined up for me. Whaddya say, Dave?

Dave: Well…

Bottom line: This is exactly the kind of thing Palin, as a running mate and potential vice president, is supposed to be ready for. Instead, she’s in hiding.

it all may be a moot point, however, as the Dem leadership on the Hill has just released a statement: “The Calvary has arrived, we’re home.” Seems they may have a tentative agreement wth the Fed leadership, now I guess we need to hear from the Repubs.

Wall St. has the message of an agreement and they’re happy, so how can McCain run and hide from the debate schedule if they announce an agreement today or early tomorrow?

It’s not clear to me from what has been reported that McCain in fact blew off Letterman to do Couric instead. Several alternative explanations are possible. One is that he was originally planning to do both and had to cancel one due to his changing plans. The other is that it was a last minute opportunity. I look forward to the details.

I’m certainly among those willing to speculate that McCain’s motives in the wake of the financial crisis are impure. Let’s face it, that’s a given for both guys, who have to be concerned not only about the nation but about how they look in the roles they are playing.

I’ve always liked David Letterman, and haven’t thought he was especially left-leaning. I also think he’s a decent enough guy that, were he to have interviewed McCain, he’d have let McCain have the forum instead of playing it for laughs and gotchas. But it’s disappointing to me if Letterman has chosen to “go off.”

To me, this is not a very big deal. Any sober assessment of the current fast-moving circumstances leads one to understand why McCain chose to appear, as I said, with a journalist instead of a comedian. If he one-offed a quick white lie to Letterman while revising his plans, I’m not very troubled by it. That’s my mileage.

*I don’t watch his show, so I don’t know about that. I will say that he doesn’t make me laugh.

He really should have told Dave he was going on the evening news instead though. I really don’t see anything wrong with that decision. He didn’t have to lie about it though … If he has a problem with this, it’s the whole “racing back to Washington” thing.
