Palin Claims Obama “Pals Around With Terrorists”

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Ayers, Barack, Palin, Partisan Nonsense

If this is all they’ve got, I truly feel sorry for them.

From The Page comes this direct quote:

There’s been a lot of interest in what I read lately. Well, I was reading my copy of today’s New York Times and I was really interested to read about Barack’s friends from Chicago.

Turns out, one of his earliest supporters is a man who, according to The New York Times was a domestic terrorist and part of a group that, quote, ‘launched a campaign of bombings that would target the Pentagon and the U.S. Capitol.’ These are the same guys who think patriotism is paying higher taxes.

This is not a man who sees America as you and I do – as the greatest force for good in the world. This is someone who sees America as imperfect enough to pal around with terrorists who targeted their own country.

Meanwhile, Obama is attacking McCain’s healthcare plan.

Good times.

    That ain’t all we got….
…so how about Barack Obama’s friendship with the two most notorious and unrepentant terrorists of the ’60s and ’70s? BERNADINE DOHRN praised the Manson Family in 1969 and BILL AYERSwho bombed the Pentagon the next year. A generation later, they’re intimates of the man who would be president…no biggy?

Let’s not forget REV. JEREMIAH ‘Hatemonger’ WRIGHT….”GOD D*** AMERICA”..etc. etc. etc….and don’t forget that other ‘holyman’ REV. MICHAEL PHLEGER…sheesh! ……and the church Obama sat in for 20 years, was married in, had his children baptized in…don’t forget that church gave their “Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. Trumpeter Award” to a man it said “truly epitomized greatness” That man is LOUIS FARRAKHAN…Maybe for Wright and some others, Farrakhan ‘epitomized greatness”. For most Americans, though, Farrakhan epitomizes racism, particularly in the form of anti-semitism.He has compiled an awesome record of offensive statements, lies…etc.

Next on the list is Chicago lawyer MAZEN ASBAHI, Sen. Barack Obama’s Muslim-outreach coordinator, who resigned August 5, 2008, “amid questions about his involvement in an Islamic investment fund and various Islamic groups,” the Wall Street Journal reported 8-6-08.

,,,and how about his long time friendship with convicted felon TONY REZKO….hmm?

..and….how about…. RASHID KHALIDI, Columbia University professor and co-founder of the Arab group, The Arab American Action Network, also has held a fundraiser for Obama. Khalidi is a harsh critic of Israel, has made statements supportive of Palestinian terror and reportedly has worked on behalf of the Palestine Liberation Organization while it was involved in anti-Western terrorism and was labeled by the State Department as a terror group.

and…FRANKLIN RAINES, who made mega-millions for himself while mismanaging Fannie Mae into a financial disaster, is one of Obama’s advisers.

    …and the list goes on..

Obama surrounds himself with scumbag friends and associates but he ain’t one of them…yeah right! Wake-up people!

  2. Pico Says:

Wright was a pretty big liability for Obama during the primaries, but I don’t recall the Ayers “relationship” having much of an impact at all–most likely because his connection with him is tenuous at best. If this is McCain’s trump card, he’s in trouble. Still, I expect McCain to bring up Ayers, Wright, and Rezko in the coming debates in the hopes of getting old news to dominate the headlines for the final month of campaigning. We’ll see how it plays with independent voters.

  3. SaneInSF Says:

There’s TON more to it than what the whitewash we’re seeing. If McCain had such ties, you better believe the MSM would be all over it. But since they’re in the tank for Obama, they’re papering it over.

News item: Obama and Ayers have known each other since at least 1987, not 1995 as been reported.

    Pathetic.

  4. Jim S Says:

    SaneInSF,

Prove it, don’t simply assert it.

  5. Rusty075 Says:

I don’t know if Donklephant has an obscenity filter for the comments or not, but if it does, could we please add the phrase “in the tank” to the block list? While you’re at it, throw in “folksy” and “maverick”. I really hope that I will never have to hear those words again after Nov. 5th.

Pulling the Ayer’s stuff back out of the closet isn’t about Obama’s judgment with regards to who he associates with, no matter what the GOP claims. It’s all about trying to play up Obama’s “otherness”, a subtle reinforcement to the chain email hate-speech that the right so loves. It’s the “Obama is a Muslim Manchurian candidate” and “Hamas endorses Obama” meme’s, only in code-speak. It’s all about the focus on the word “Terrorist”. They almost never mention Ayers by name, or that his acts took place nearly 40 years ago, or that they were anti-Vietnam war as opposed to anti-America. Ten years ago Ayers would have been referred to a “1960′s radical”, or a “violent anti-war organizer”, but only very rarely as a “terrorist”. Since 9/11 the word “terrorist” has taken on a very specific connotation. Terrorist equals Muslim equals Al Qaeda equals Osama Bin Laden. And don’t think for a minute that Schmidt and company are unaware of the word association.

The reason that this attack has never gained much traction is, I believe, that once people learn the specifics the charge carries much less weight. Case in point, this actual conversation from around the watercooler at my office: “Did you hear that Obama is friends with some Terrorist guy?”. “Yeah, it’s some vietnam war protester dude from back in the ’60′s. He’s some like bleeding heart libral in Chicago now. They were on some charity thing together or something”. “Oh, I thought they meant like Saddam Hussein or something”. “No dumb**s, he’s dead now anyway”. (significant paraphrasing liberties taken, but you get the point)

Why don’t people care about Ayers? Just breakdown the demographics:
-To anyone under the age of 50 this is history class stuff. And if anything the antiwar movement of the 60′s and 70′s has been sufficiently romanticized to almost make these people look like anti-establishment heroes.
-For people who are old enough to have lived through the Weathermen era, a big percentage were fairly sympathetic to the goals, though not the methods, of Ayers and his ilk.
-So who’s left for whom this is a big deal? Baby-boomers or older who were either Pro-Vietnam war, or at least anti-war-protester. In other words, Republicans.

A Stanley Kurtz blog entry is your proof? To quote Justin above, “If this is all they’ve got, I truly feel sorry for them.” Not to mention the fact that the one “News Item” you trumpet doesn’t actually appear in said blog.

Ok, but to follow your line of thinking….let’s say that Obama and Ayers became best friends while working together on the Chicago Annenberg Challenge to improve public schools. Then what? Even if you have the association, where’s the guilt? What evil deed has been done? Even by its own admission the CAC didn’t really manage to accomplish much of anything. Do you think that sitting on a board with Ayers is going to lead to Barack and Michelle sitting around their kitchen table making bombs to plant in government buildings?

Because if you’re looking to disqualify a candidate based solely on the people he knows, your boy McCain has a pretty nasty little laundry list of his own, don’ cha know.

  8. patrikios Says:

Raines is NOT one of Obama’s advisors, and no one has proven that Ayers and Obama were intimate. Don’t know where to start, but I gotta say this: nice cut and paste job there Stacey.

  9. Jim S Says:

The problem is that Kurtz in turn is doing nothing but making assertions without backing them up. Everything he cites is the same thing. Specious arguments by hardcore Republican activists just doesn’t automatically make something true.

  10. wj Says:

I have to wonder if the people who make or believe this assertion have ever served on a board. Of anything, even a PTA or school board.

Yes, there are people who are also on the board with whom you are, or end up being, friends. But there are also people with whom you disagree, or whom you dislike and even fight with constantly (albeit usually verbally). To claim that you “associate with,” and therefore have similar views to, all of them is simply daft.

One could, with exactly the same logic, claim that McCain, as a member of the Senate, “associates with” Obama. Not to mention the avowed Socialist Senator from Vermont. Does that imply that he agrees with them about things? I mean, how silly can you get.

  11. kabster Says:

First off, what Wright said was not all that radical when he said “God damn America” It’s funny how they leave out the beginning part of that statement. He was talking about the factual atrocities that have been committed by the U.S. and the dictators and monarchs the U.S. has kept propped up that kill their own people. Wright said nothing worse than Martin Luther King did.

I’m more concerned with his partnership with Rezco. (or how ever you spell his name)

  12. kranky kritter Says:

The old “guilt by association” schtick has limited effectiveness. The more familiar folks are with the figure being smeared, and the more that person’s established image is at variance with what the smear suggests, the less effective the smear is.

These various association smears attempt to suggest that:

•Obama pals w/terrorists (Ayers), and therefore is sympathetic to terrorism.

•Obama has associated himself with an overzealous black pastor unable to see that America today is very different from the racist America of his youth, and so Obama therefore thinks and would govern from the same perspective.

•Obama has ties to a crooked and wealthy real estate guy (Rezko), and therefore is himself just as corrupt.

The trouble for partisans shopping these smears is that the public has taken their own measure of Obama. And Americans just don’t buy the idea that he’s a proto-black-nationalist or a crooked wheeler-dealer.

Obama has established his personna with the public, and it can’t be washed away by simply listing personal associations that might be troubling if in fact there’s more to them than personal acquaintance. If someone can catch Obama with a bundle of 100 dollar bills in a brown paper bag under his floor boards, or can unearth a video of him saying that “we need to kill whitey,” that’d be different.

Of course, folks who would never in a zillion years ever have voted for Obama find such associations deeply troubling and very compelling. They have no trouble believing the worst. Outside such circles though, their effect is minimal.

  13. Debi Brand Says:

Can we all say “Gen. Zia? Taliban in Afghanistan, Afgani Freedom fighters–The budding al-Qaeda?” “9-11?”

“Musharraf was a hawk who backed the Taliban (and very likely al-Qaeda) in Afghanistan and who nearly provoked two wars with India. Yes, a pillar of stability, as McCain says.”

    ………………

“Having backed the radical Muslim extremists in Afghanistan in the 1980s, having winked at Zia’s dictatorship and nuclear program, having coddled Musharraf’s authoritarianism, is McCain going to bring us more disasters like September 11, done by his good friends, Reagan’s Freedom Fighters?”

  14. Howard Says:

TALK IS CHEAP … CHECK OBAMA’S RECORD !!!
A candidate’s track record, and associations are always a legitimate issue when running for President. Let’s take a look at the qualifications, judgement, and experience of Obama, who is running for President. Obama had 25 years to fulfill the potential he displayed as a rising start at Harvard Law School … and, how did he live up to that potential? … He chose to align himself with anti-American racist, Jeremiah Wright for TWENTY YEARS … along with Ferrahkan, Rezko, Ayers, and others. As a community organizer, he registered thousands of voters in Chicago … then, when he ran for the state legislature, he took away their votes, by disqualifying his opponent (a black woman) on a technicality. As a U.S. Senator, he voted present 160 times … he never called a meeting on the Afghanistan committee he chaired (although he NOW says we must shift all our military from Iraq to Afghanistan). He claimed Foreign Policy experience from a 9 day whirlwind photo op to 6 countries. And, he spent almost half of his tenure neglecting his responsibilities as a U.S. Senator, so he could run for President. Senator McCain served America honorably for 22 years in the military. He proved his love for America, as well as his honor, integrity and character, by refusing early release as a P.O.W., even while being tortured. He served America as a ‘contributing’ U.S. Senator, working across the aisle, for 20 years. If Obama’s Twentyfive year track record shows he lacks judgement, and can’t be trusted, who cares what he says about Health Care and the Economy! What Obama never learned is Character. He simply can’t be trusted … ask Jeremiah Wright, a friend of 20 years, who Obama betrayed for personal ambition … and, you Obama supporters really think he won’t betray you If he gets elected??? If he gets elected, you Obama supporters will be facing a HUGE disillusionment !!!

  15. Jim S Says:

The Afghanistan committee? Wow, I never heard of that committee. Back to the Kool Aid stand, Howard.

  16. deanrdd Says:

Just wondering. Since William Ayers hasn’t been charged with anything and is not currently under any type of investigation, if he were attacked because Sarah Palin called him a terrorist on national television, could she be culpable?
It just doesn’t seem that you could go around and legally call other US citizens “terrorists”, even for a campaign, even if the citizen did something 40 years ago.

  17. Ted Says:

Has anyone answered the question “Are the Obamas as close with the ‘terrorists’ that lived in their neighborhood as the Bushes were with the ‘terrorist’s family’ with witch they did business, the Bin Ladens?”

  18. Howard Says:

Since the mainstream media is in the tank for Obama … he literally can get away with anything! When the media is one sided in reporting the truth, they are worse than a witness who is convicted of perjury. A biased media paves the way for despots and dictators who rise to power. Hitler could not have risen to power without his minister of propaganda, Joseph Gobbels … who controlled what the public saw, heard, and eventually believed. In time, a biased media can even revise history, turning young minds into automatons, who think and act in unison … even to the point of strapping on suicide bombs. I’m in my 60′s, and I’ve never seen such a biased media before. Our wonderful country is starting to change in very bad ways. It seems that an organized group of malcontents have infiltrated our media and our schools … in an effort to change America beyond recognition. These arrogant fools are going to turn America into a defenseless third world country. I believe that our only hope to save America, is to reject the biased media’s candidate, and elect the candidate who has always represented truth, jusice, and the American way. Elect Senator John McCain in November. God Bless America.

  19. Get Real Says:

McCain and Palin need to focus on what the American people really want to hear: the economy.

When they go off making harsh and false accusations, such as the one Palin has been ranting off for several days, that Obama is palling around with terrorists, they start to lose credentials and trust from the American people.

Voters are smarter than that and know that this is simply a smear campaign, because the McPalin’s road to the White House has come to an end.

They will lose independent voters (which they need) if they continue on this ridiculous streak.

So far, the polls speak for themselves with Obama in the lead.

“These arrogant fools are going to turn America into a defenseless third world country. I believe that our only hope to save America, is to reject the biased media’s candidate,”

Howard, you just described the Bush administration to a T. No doubt you voted for them twice though. Sad that someone your age still can’t think for himself and see something as obvious as the destruction of our economy and military by the fools you keep voting for.

  21. Ray Says:

The comment that Palin made was based off an article that was essentially criticizing the very act she was commiting.

The article showed that the Obama and Ayers connection was very loose and that not only is Ayers no long affiliated with terrorists but that Obama was eight when Ayers was. It was an article in response to the recent attack ads and comments that the McCain campaign has been making.

additionally, the fact that Palin is making such fallacious comments when her credibility is already less than perfect, makes me not only quesion her political competence but her moral judgement and intellegence.
