It doesn't need to have any effect. Obama would have to be caught making out with Bill Ayers on the altar of the Trinity church in order to lose this election.

I don't necessarily think McCain will regret going negative... it's like how hockey teams pull their goalie in the final minute when they're down by two or more goals. It's more likely you'll go down another goal than score, but what option do you have? McCain can't run on his policies, and his bipolar behavior this past month makes it tough for him to run on his judgment and leadership abilities. The experience argument was working over the summer, but he stupidly discarded that argument when he chose Palin. Trying to make Obama the boogieman is all he has left.

As to the effectiveness of the Keating ad, it has the benefit of having more substance than McCain's accusations against Obama, and it also plays into McCain's biggest weakness--the economy. However, I'm skeptical that it'll work as well as Rezko and Wright smears; anything that requires more than a few sentences to explain, much less a documentary, may be too complicated to catch on with people. We'll see.

In any case, as an Obama supporter I'm very happy to see his campaign hit back so quickly and forcefully. They've run an uneven campaign since finishing the primaries, but this actually instills a bit of confidence in me.

Obama Campaign's "Keating Five" 13-Minute Documentary ...

I never have the reaction to these things I'm supposed to. At first, and even though I've brought up Keating 5 myself on a number of occasions, I ended up feeling bad for John McCain and wishing Obama hadn't gone this route. On the other hand, McCai...

Hmm Jimmy, I think you're wishing it'll have no effect. Whether or not it does remains to be seen.

In other words, No Effect.

McCain HAS TO go negative, he's trailing by a disturbing margin given how close the election is. If you are trailing late in an election, your only chance is to spook your opponents' supporters at the last minute. McCain is unlikely to regret this of all things.

If he loses, his regret ought to be focused on :
•admitting he's not that economics savvy
•saying the economy was fundamentally sound as it was tanking
• choosing Palin to energize the base given that it sure seems to have cost him with independents who perceive her as not up to the job

actually i doubt mccain will regret this stuff. He was going to lose on the policies so what did he have to lose? If he wanted to win he needed to do something and this what they had. I mean do they want a fight over their health care plans? this is a domestic policy election and mccain is not a domestic policy candidate.
