Is this McCain’s last stand?
By Nick Ragone | Related entries in NewsAlthough there is one remaining debate on October 15th, in some respects this may be McCain’s last, best chance to alter the trajectory of this election.
Even if he scores a victory on October 15th, it may be too late to make an impact on the election; after all, a third of the country has begun early voting, and McCain needs to change perceptions right now.
Clearly McCain isn’t getting any help from the stock market or current events. The lingering chaos in the financial markets continues to work against him, and it’s suffocating his message (if he has any). At the end of the day, the only thing that will resonate in this atmosphere are sharp attacks, and it’s the one thing left in McCain’s arsenal.
The only way he’ll convince voters that Obama isn’t fit to be President is by playing the “guilt by association” card with Rezco, Ayers and Reverend Wright. The only time Obama’s numbers suffered during the primary was during the Rezco trial and when the Wright tapes surfaced. There might not be another smoking gun moment out there, so McCain needs to force the issue and dredge up these characters. If he doesn’t do it tonight, he might not have another chance.
I’ll be live blogging the debate tonight at www.nickragone.com
