I just don’t think McCain connected with the audience as well as Obama did tonight.

“That one” is a pretty dismissive way to refer to someone. It grated on me at the time and the CNN crew has harped on it as a very bad moment for McCain.

It brings to mind “I did not have sex with that woman.”

Even Fox questioned the “that one” comment. Glaring mistep by a guy who needed to blunt an “angry old man” image problem.

Ignoring for a moment how disrespectful “that one” sounds, the tone he used with “I betcha don’t know” is as if he’s speaking to a room full of children. I felt that way several times during the debate – McCain was infantalizing the voters, I felt: “Most of you had probably never heard of Fannie and Freddie before all this happened…” Ugh.
