People like Kristol feel that four abyssmal years of Obama are exactly what the conservative base needs to reignite the movement. A McCain loss, combined with a unified Democrat government (Congress + Exec) that simply can't help itself but prove out the "tax-and-spend" meme, perfectly positions the right side of the GOP for a major comeback. A McCain win would put the conservative movement back even farther than Bush has.
