The speech was excellent, and heartfelt. There’s no spin here. McCain knew he had lost, and he said as much. He wasn’t trying to cast blame, he wasn’t making excuses, he was gracious and thoughtful.

I’m glad he lost and still question some of how he ran his campaign, this speech makes me start to forget some of that. And while I don’t think he’s ever been as much of a ‘maverick’ as he claims, he still was mostly a more moderate voice on the republican side, and I hope he can rediscover that moderate path now that he no longer has a political need to woo the social conservatives. The republican party needs strong moderate voices if it is to have any hope of rebuilding itself.

It was a nice speech. The cynic in me says this was more of the John McCain getting out ahead of the story to put his spin on it (ala Keating 5, ala Cindy the drug thief), but I still want to believe it was more than that.

I thought that his speech was genuine, conciliatory and classy. His early concession only adds to my belief that he is, at heart a very good man.

I give McCain many points for conceding early. He cut the head off of the “stolen election” snake ASAP and by doing so he showed that his commitment to “country first” truly was a priority to him when it really mattered.

Sen. McCain gave a most gracious and magnanimous concession speech. And, though I am one of about five people who voted Nader, I swell with pride in my country and hope for our future: Barack Hussein Obama, a black American with about the worst possible name in history, is President Elect! A million backward racist bastards go to sleep crushed. JOY. Tears well in my eyes.

McCain is the real deal. His candidacy was flawed, but the man behind it is a genuine hero. He showed his best colors tonight. I hope his party heard his speech and follows his lead. Well done, J Mack.
