Quote Of The Day

With him we get a president with the political intelligence of a Bill Clinton harnessed to the steely self-discipline of a Vladimir Putin. (I say this admiringly.) With these qualities, Obama will now bestride the political stage as largely as did Reagan.
- Charles Krauthammer in his column today about the President Elect.
It’s genuinely encouraging to see that conservatives are starting to see exactly what Obama could mean to this country. And that doesn’t have to be a scary thing.
Sure, there will be disagreements. That’s to be expected and it’s all part of a healthy democracy. But if we can fix these problems together there will be plenty of room at the table for everybody.

I don’t see why this is “encouraging”. Krauthammer is obviously no admirer of either Clinton or Putin, and I found this column as snarky as anything else he’s written about Obama (and he’s written a lot). Moreover, blaming the whole thing on the financial meltdown is disingenuous and surely Krauthammer knew it. The only time McCain led in the polls was after the Republican convention and the Palin bounce was already starting to fade when the financial tsunami hit: Andrew Sullivan, for instance, showed a graph demonstrating that the downturn for McCain, and upturn for Obama, started a week before Lehman.

That is a startling reversal; in fact, it’s such a turn-around that it makes me wonder whether he’s up to something.

It’s seems that Obama’s victory might very well divide us more than ever before. Surprisingly it’s not his opponents that are broadening the division but his supporters.
