Why Hillary For Secretary Of State?

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Barack, Foreign Policy, Good Decisions, Hillary

I speculated about this earlier today, and Marc Ambinder has some thoughts today.

Here’s the one I think is the most prescient:

6. The CW in Washington is that Obama wants Clinton in his cabinet more than Clinton wants to be in the cabinet, the theory being that the moment she steps into the administration, she loses her power base, she loses her Senate seat forever, and she loses her voice on domestic policy. She concedes her political identity.

Keep your friends close and your “friends” closer. :-)

This is cetainly a good reason why Obama would like Clinton in this role. It does not explain why Clinton would take it. I’m guessing they got together for Obama to pitch her, for Hillary to turn it down cold, and then explain what she really wants. Some basic horse trading is going on.

Secretary of State isn’t exactly a broom closet. Clinton would have far more authority and clout than she would as junior senator from New York.

She should take it if she’s serious about all these reforms that she’s passionate about. She’ll have far more leverage to push through things like healthcare from the sec of state seat than from the senate, especially given her supposed skills at back-room maneuvers.

If this is real (which I think it probably is) I think she’ll ultimately take it, at least I hope she will.
