Bloggers, Pick Chuck Todd For Meet The Press
By Justin Gardner | Related entries in MediaLooks like Tom Brokaw won’t be staying on and four names are being floated right now to continue Russert’s legacy: Chuck Todd, Andrea Mitchell, Gwen Ifill and David Gregory.
Reporting from New York — NBC executives are closing in on a decision about who will take over “Meet the Press,” its venerable Sunday morning political talk show, with the announcement coming possibly on Dec. 7.According to network sources, that may be Tom Brokaw’s last day on the air as interim moderator of the program, a post he assumed after the sudden death of longtime host Tim Russert in June.
People close to the process said that they did not yet know who would be ultimately named to the job, arguably Washington’s most powerful journalistic perch. The deliberations have been closely guarded by NBC Universal Chief Executive Jeff Zucker and NBC News President Steve Capus, who have not yet made a decision, said spokeswoman Allison Gollust.
So why do I want Todd? Well, to me he’s the best pick out of those four because, like Russert, he’s a numbers guy and there’s nobody I trust more right now in media than him. And let’s face it, if Russert hadn’t passed you know he would have been in the MTP for another decade at least. So replacing him with somebody cut from the same cloth makes the most sense.
Gwen Ifill would be an interesting pick because she’s an outsider, but her style is dry as toast and I fear she’d turn Meet The Press into something more akin to Washington Week. And I’m sorry Gwen, but that show is boring…even for PBS.
As for Andrea Mitchell, well, she’s a fantastic reporter, and that’s what she should continue to do. Also, and this is just a watchability thing for me, but her voice is a bit grating at times. So I’d be less likely to tune in to MTP if she was at the helm.
Last we have David Gregory, and while he’s a good reporter he doesn’t strike me as terribly insightful. At least from what I’ve seen of his mediocre MSNBC show. Like Mitchell, he should stick to reporting.
So bloggers…that means it’s up to us.
If you want Chuck Todd (and I know an overwhelming number of you do), it’s time to start letting NBC know. But be specific and title your posts with something simple like “Pick Chuck Todd For Meet The Press” so NBC folks can do a quick search online and see what we’re thinking. Because, like it or not, scanning headlines is a pretty common practice when trying to spot trends. Yeah, I know we all wish they’d read everything we write, but there’s also this thing called reality…
In any event, here’s hoping we’ll all get an early Christmas present.

Yikes. I hope that report is wrong. I wish NBC would find someone less partisan, more intelligent and with a better sense of humor.
