Whoa!! I WOULD believe how people live here -- because I am one of them. Kirksville, Missouri, is the home of the statewide highly selective liberal arts university (Truman State University), the home of the first college of osteopathic medicine (A.T. Still University), which is still training doctors, the home of a highly rated elementary and secondary school. A successfuly California DNA lab just relocated here because of the facilities offered by both universities to work with them. A number of famous people grew up in and around the area you mention--people like Walt Disney, J. C. Penny, Geraldine Page, Sara Teasdale, T. S. Eliot. We boast one of the best Missouri Conservation offices in the state, a wonderful year-round state park, and of course, good hunting. We are far, far from "backwoods." Of course, if you were hunting you didn't see much of anything except backwoods, did you? You might want to visit the websites of Kirksville, Truman State University, and A.T. Still University.

I did not grow up here. I grew up near Detroit, Michigan, years ago -- when it was a "big city." Living in Kirksville is far superior: clean air, clean and tasty water, low crime, friendly and caring neighbors. Everything good that a small town (17,000 people) can be!

I moved from a large city in the South to a much smaller city in a neigboring state; the amount of alcohol and drug abuse was stagering; it appeared as almost everyone I knew had a family member or close relative that was a meth addict.

There are certainly good things about small towns but as a permanent place to live and raise children, they leave much to be desired.
