Yes Detroit, there is a Santa

As much as I would like to blame the crappy management of the US auto industry, you cannot ignore that Japanese auto makers get nice subsidies in research and development. Plus the govt. keeps the Yen artificially low to benefit their industry. Not to mention the health care and other tax breaks, it’s not necessarily a level playing field.
That said, Detroit has a lot to prove, but we shouldn’t hang them out to dry…our government just needs to level the playing field a bit.

I’ve got a crazy idea… How about at least one of the big 3 actually *innovates*, and comes up with a product that we actually prefer to buy?!? How crazy would that be?

Subsidies given by whom? Are you saying that U.S. automakers have no access whatsoever to these subsidies… or to similar incentives?

This is debatable, but I find it hard to believe that the Govt. wasn’t involved…which isn’t a bad thing. The U.S. govt. should support R/D in various facets.
