The volcano monitoring is like hurrican monitoring, or tornado monitoring. It's an essential govt program to avoid huge human and property destruction. That's the problem when you make some incredibly minor part of a big program the core of your message. The classic was the marsh mice as part of some big wetlands reclamation project in CA. The economy is melting down and we're talking about mice! It all reinforces the fact that the GOP has become the party of stupid. As for Jindal....he sucked...face it. I also think putting up the governor of one of the most backward states in the country which is in the south and couldn't function unless it was receiving federal aid paid for with tax dollars from the west coast and NE to give us all lectures on government spending also demonstrated a huge tin ear.

Once again, a Republican reinforcing the stereotype of the GOP as scientifically ignorant (perhaps willfully, perhaps not). I simply cannot get past Jindal referring to "something called volcano monitoring" as if it were some sort of voodoo. It is, in fact, a matter of life and death here in the Pacific Northwest - and it is incredibly offensive that it would be used to set up an idiotic joke. Yes, there are real volcanos in this country and they do erupt - and yes we need time for evacuation procedures...it's just incomprehensible that Governor of Louisiana of all places would write those lines, be oblivious to the ignorance of the words upon review, and then say those lines to a national audience. I don't see how this man could regain my respect.

You see, that is what is wrong with American's....it's not who are or what you know, it's how well you are able to present yourself. We are a shallow country that will be forever fooled by the Mack the Knives.

It's not how you feel, baby...it's how you look, and you look marvelous!

kranky, the GOP has a huge idea deficit. Tax cuts are a universal panacea for them and I don't see them changing that. Since it can be pointed out that they haven't cured all our ills yet they have a problem.

The GOP has a huge frontman deficit. It's a giant problem for them. Obama comes across as sensible and understanding. That's not SO hard. But he also comes across as calmly resolute and formidable.

Whatever is the exact opposite of calmly resolute and formidable, that's how the GOP feels these days. Slight, insubstantial, whiny, uncooperative for its own sake.

If Palin and Jindal are the supposed to be the new faces of the GOP, it's a B-movie, folks.

Granted, the democrats have Pelosi and Reid as cartoon characters, but they won't be the top faces like Obama and Hillary Clinton seem poised to be. And I do mean poised.

I agree that Gov. Jindal came off horribly, but I don't think it is completely impossible to have a reasonable response to a Presidential address. Unfortunately it has degraded into a "they're wrong-we're right" response. I think if you have a response of "Here are the goals and here is how can do it such that it will work better for the country and for you"(and Jindal certainly didn't do that). I think the current state of affairs that that we have lost the ability to actually have a serious debate without it degrading into entrenched positions and name-calling.
