Kos Goes WAY Out Of Bounds On Pittsburgh Gunman Story

(Note: For those of you who use Twitter, there’s a thing called “re-tweeting” which basically involves taking somebody’s tweet, putting an “RT” in front of it and then publishing it as your own. The effect is you’re reproducing somebody else’s content, but giving them props for writing something interesting. Understanding this practice is key to figuring out what’s going on in the following story.)

So then, it looks as if the founder of Daily Kos and one of its contributors has gone WAY over the line when it comes to tying conservatives to a recent shooting in Pittsburgh.

Tommy Christopher of Political Machine took this screencap of the tweeting and re-tweeting that went on…

Christopher’s reaction…

When I saw his re-Tweet, I was stunned, and I hadn’t even heard about the Pittsburgh shooting yet. I thought he was talking about the shooting in Binghamton. When I looked back at Houle’s Tweet, and I found the story of the three policemen who were killed yesterday, I could not believe my eyes. As you can see, I tried to get Markos to explain his re-Tweet, unable to believe that these two would be joking about this at all, let alone hours after the tragedy. [...]

Maybe there’s something wrong with me, but I think this is shameful. This is the kind of thing I would probably delete at Political Machine. I don’t even see the humor in it, even setting aside the heartless ghoulishness involved.

More broadly, I’m starting to feel like a lot of the liberal blogosphere is forgetting what it means to be a liberal, or maybe I’m using the wrong word. After 8 years of mortal kombat with the right, we’ve swung too far, become too belligerent.

I stopped reading Daily Kos a long time ago because I got sick of the constant, divisive rhetoric that clogged every post, and such is the reason why a blog like ours exists. But taking it to the next level and using the broad brush to say that conservatives are cop killers is beyond the pale. And the Cheney joke was in extremely poor taste.

In other words, dumb knows no party and we’re provided examples of that every single day.

I wrote a post earlier today about this very thing, cautioning top right wing voices from throwing out irresponsible conspiracy theories lest it poison the debate. Does it surprise me that the left has equally irresponsible voices? Of course not. Conflict sells on blogs and nobody knows that better than a guy like Markos. But hopefully people will start growing tired of it and stop reading them altogether.

Seems unlikely, but a guy can hope.

So, let me see if I have this straight: wingnuts like Michele Bachmann openly call for ‘revolution’, stoking fears among the gullible gun nuts that Obama will have their precious semi-automatic assault weapons violently wrenched from their cold, dead hands by swarthy ACORN jackboots. Yet it’s Kos who gets the full ZOMG VAPORS!!1 treatment because of some offhand remark ABOUT the guano loco set and the consequences of their brazen, willfully indifferent batsh!ttery?

Methinks your sense of priorities may well have been grossly perverted by years spent tirelessly shovelling ‘bipartisan’ bullsh!t (how did that Unity08 thing work out, btw?)

Wevs. At least everyone knows what to buy you (and Christopher) for Christmas this year. Hopefully there’s a package deal @ Costco on smelling salts, pearls and fainting couches.

(“h/t: Captain Ed.” Indeed. Again, priorities. Maybe you should ask yourself where his lie.)

Matt, you do realize you just proved my point with that comment, right?

As far as Unity 08, I called them out on their do-nothingness a long, long time ago. Obviously you didn’t read any of those posts.

So then, either you change your handle and drop the language or you’re banned. The choice is yours.

Just think, Justin:if you were C. Buckley, and mattbastard were the NR, you’d be eaten by your very own. Good thing that’s not going to happen at this site, but a lucid mind does serve less and less purpose in the blogs, and that discourages me when I lurk elsewhere.

    Justin,

Reading through KOS Tweet, I don’t see it. Was it a little flip, yes. Was it worth ZOMG treatment, no.

I think you’re trying too hard to be “moderate”; right now some portions of the Republican leadership are batshit insane with their rhetoric, but that does not mean you have to – gin up – the equivalent rhetoric on the Democratic side. It doesn’t burnish your “moderate” cred, it just makes you look like a partisan hack.

I expected a little better from you Justin, I with Matt on this one.

    Loviatar,

First, the fact that Kos used this opportunity to make a joke was completely out of bounds.

Second, it’s pretty clear he pinned the blame on the right wing media and I don’t think that’s appropriate. Because when you blur the lines between the responsibility for this incident and responsible media behavior, you get into a situation where censorship will come up. Not good. Now, I do think that the right wing media needs to be more responsible with what they say because I think it adds to the paranoia that can fuel something like this, but saying that they are responsible for this is just flat out wrong, both ethically and intellectually.

Third, this makes me look like a partisan hack? Well, then I’ll gladly be a partisan hack because I think this is EXACTLY the type of nonsense that bloggers need to call out. And I think it’s pretty clear that I called out both the right and the left on this issue, so how you can call me a hack seems to speak much more about your own leanings than it does mine.

Ok, this is going to sound odd, but your entire attitude towards Kos is entirely different than your attitudes towards the Right wing blogosphere. I’m curious why you’re taking a rather holier than thou snarky view while in your post towards the Right Wingers is respectful and deferential….

While you’re at it, have you read this article?

might be worth verifying and talking about
