Czech Politicians Egged On By Throwers

Politicians don’t like to get egg on their faces, but one Czech politician is having a particularly difficult time avoiding that. Jiri Paroubek of the Social Democrat Party has raised the ire of his opponents to the point that he is routinely pelted with eggs — hundreds of eggs.
Two weeks ago, someone threw an egg at Paroubek, and it missed.
Last week the egg throwing got worse. Paroubek, nicknamed Paroubegg by his opponents, asked for police protection as the eggs began to fly in greater frequency. Even with the police protection, hundreds of eggs came flying through the air.
The egg-throwing phenomenon has been fueled by a Facebook group of more than 52,000 members titled “Eggs for Paroubek in every town!â€
The Social Democrats tried to appeal to peace by offering scrambled eggs to voters. It was to no avail.
The Social Democrats have also tried to pin the egg throwing on fascists, but some observers think the egg throwers are not even interested in politics. It is simply a popular style, an expression that has caught on with the bored and disenchanted under-30 crowd.
The egg throwing has distracted the campaign from the worrisome economic crisis to egg-fouled politicians.
Top politicians throughout the political spectrum have called for the egg throwing to stop. Some are calling it “political terrorismâ€. Even former President Vaclav Havel called the egg throwing no longer a “casual practical joke.â€
Paroubek doesn’t have any humor over the matter anymore, either. He told reporters covering his campaign that if they continued to write stories about the egg throwing incidents then he would get even after the elections.
“After the elections, I will take a basket of eggs and come to your newsroom and throw them at you. I don’t like the way you write … I will pelt you and you will see how funny it is,†Paroubek said.
Ouch! This doesn’t sound like a happy politician. I don’t think anyone can blame Paroubek. He tried to run a serious campaign but being splattered by eggs gets tiresome rather quickly. Fortunately for Paroubek and the other egged Social Democrats, the voting ends today. Hopefully, the egg throwing will as well.
