Palin Stepping Down as Alaska’s Governor

In a surprise move, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin has announced she is resigning, effective July 26th. She claims that because she is not running for re-election, she doesn’t want to be a lame duck and subject herself to politics as usual.

Odd excuse. Either some scandal is about to break or Palin has decided that stepping down over a year before her term is over will help her prepare for a 2012 run at the presidency. Or, you know, she’s sick of the publicity.

It’ll be interesting to see what the former vice-presidential nominee does next.

Or she’s mentally unbalanced. You forgot that possibility.

  2. gerryf Says:

Well, that’s a stunner. I’m opting for mentally unbalanced as well.

When I saw the tweets on this, I fully expected the link to lead an article at The Onion or something.

    This is just weird.

I can’t help but think that over the next couple of days/weeks we’re definitely going to be hearing more about “the rest of the story”.

… there has got to be more to this.

She doesn’t seem to be the type to take a hike on the Appalachian trail, so if there is a scandal my best guess at this point is an inditement. Quitting because people are being mean to you–and admitting that–is a terrible move if you have any further aspirations. She can’t claim she wanted to quit because it’s wrong to run for a new job when you are in office since she ran for VP as Governor. Very odd overall. On the Friday of a holiday weekend with a horrible rambling unpublicized speech too… Say what you will about American politics, but it’s always interesting theater!

There’s always the chance she’s quitting for good, which would be fun to watch in the Palinite circles (she was the second coming, to have Ronald Reagan 2.0 quit would be too much to bear).

I think that whole Letterman thing just sucked the will to live right out of her!

  6. michael reynolds Says:

My guess is she’s still going for 2012. With her in NH and Iowa the rest of the GOPers will have a hard time getting any attention.

The job of ripping Palin will shift to GOPers.

Speaking as a Democrat who has given up thinking the GOP will grow up, I’d hate to see her leave. Crazy people are fun.

  7. the Word Says:

Every time she opens her mouth she sucks away some of my will to live. Did I mention, in 2009 She believes in Witchcraft!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. Tully Says:

At a guess, Todd and family told her they were tired of the paparazzi and other such BS and told her she needed to make a painful choice.

  9. michael reynolds Says:

She needs a less stressful, less public job. Say, President of the United States.

  10. gerryf Says:

I think she’s just tired after defending Alaska from Russia for the last 30 months….

  11. Joshua Says:

Scandal or no scandal, at this point I doubt she’ll be in the running for 2012 – as I’ve argued here before and others have done so above, I doubt that deep down she’s really up for such a long and grueling campaign. But considering her pull as a fundraiser, she strikes me as more suited to the role of “king-maker” anyway. That is, she could propel any candidate she decides to endorse to the head of the GOP class (limited as it is) virtually overnight – and she probably knows it.

We haven’t seen or heard the last of Sarah Palin.

First, let’s get something straight…Sarah Palin was selected by John McCain to be his running mate! There is no credible evidence that she campaigned for her nomination. He asked and she accepted.

At no time in her political career has she ever stated that she planned to run for the presidency! All this talk about her running for that job in 2012 can be attributed to the Media pundits and no one else.

Now we see the same Media and political speculators, especially those who never liked her from the beginning calling her a “quitter”, etc.

Mrs. Palin clearly explained her decision. I watched her entire speech and she was very explicit…Her political enemies, both in the Democratic as well in the Republican party were engaged in dirty politics! There can only be one reason for this…they were taking counsel of their own fears, thinking that she was a direct threat to their political futures.

The traditional politician is constantly in fear of not being elected, of having to actually go out into society and make an honest living.

They failed to understand that Mrs. Palin isn’t, and never was a “traditional” politician.

She clearly demonstrated this when she acknowledged that having to constantly defend herself against frivolous accusations by her enemies was costing the state of Alaska millions of dollars, dollars that should be spent on Alaska, not on protecting it’s governor.

The turmoil authored by her detractors had cost her and her family over a half million dollars from their savings, monies that were down the drain, lost to her and her family forever. Common sense should tell everyone of modest means that there may come a time when serving the public is an exercise in futility! Mrs. Palin and her family are not immune from debt. Unlike most Washington politicians she hasn’t accumulated millions of dollars from special interest groups or favor seeking contributors.

Now I can’t speak for anyone but myself, but given the facts and the circumstances surrounding her announced resignation, my only question would be” “What took you so long?”

What she said about “lame duck” politicians remaining on the gravy train, taking trips to foreign countries, collecting speaking fees while on the government payroll and with the full knowledge that they intend to do nothing for the taxpayers until the day their term expires is directly on point.

When she announced her intention to resign to pursue a “higher calling” the pundits were quick to assume that she intended to take time to create a political machine that would get her into the White House. How wrong they are! They think this way because that’s what THEY would do!

And then there’s always the possibility that she’s pregnant again! Being anti-abortion she’d once again have to explain that decision. Could it be that her “higher calling” might just be that of being a mother?

American political history is rampant with self serving politicians who willingly sacrifice their families and loved ones for the fleeting power that they believe politics will give them.

Right now we have to contend with many of these types of elected officials. If we paid more attention to who we elect as opposed to the information we get from the biased media and/or their political handlers we’d all be better off. It appears that the electorate did vote for “change”, well, they’re getting it! It’s called “socialism”!
