Oh, come on now, the Republicans don't want everybody to die. They just want Democrats to die.

Schultz is definitely setting off the same alarm bells in my head that Sean Hannity does. That's what we needed, an MSNBC answer to Hannity. Void filled. I wholeheartedly agree with Justin's greater premise that what MSNBC and FNC do seems more damaging to informed political discourse than helpful. I basically tune in to see if a guest is worth listening to. Some of these shows do serve as too brief platforms for folks with useful opinions.

Strictly speaking Shultz is probably wrong. I doubt Erick Cantor wants that woman to die of cancer.

But as a practical matter Ed Schultz is right. Erick Cantor opposes reforms that would cure this woman's cancer. This will, directly, result in her death. Cantor's own defense of his position is mind-bogglingly naive -- "don't worry, you'd be alright if you just knew the right form to fill out, from the right hospital and/or government institution?" It's possible he's right, but when you're literally dying of cancer running around the state filling out charity care forms at every hospital, the state capital, federal offices, etc. on the off-chance you might qualify for one of those programs before you actually die....

BTW, most politicians answer questions like these by pointing to the staffer they hired specifically to keep track of all charity-care programs in the entire district, and saying "that guy will make sure you get the care you need." This is called constituent service, and pols who are good at constituent service almost never have trouble back home.

Days into it, isn't the provocative and misleading title really over the line? Wants voters to die? Really? When did he say that or even imply it?

Isn't that something you normally have to print a retraction and an apology for? We all get busy but this is bat-crap crazy :-)

Oh Gerry- Now we'll have to overreact to find a moderate liberal who is equally moderately bat-crap crazy to show balance. My main issues with him is he seems like a total dick of a human being -- often. He's entitled to his opinions, it's his job. Boorish behavior is his sin.

Personally don't think Scarborough is bat-crap crazy. I do find him to often be so snarky that I have to turn off the show. He definitely has a petty, mean streak that is not at all appealing to watch.

Here's one example.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJc8K3P49ls&feature=related

He also constantly tells people how moderate he is. If he were as balanced as he thinks he is, it wouldn't be necessary.

On the bat-crap crazy meter, Schultz falls somewhere between Scarborough and Limbaugh--he doesn't even come close to Beck and Levine.

Is that good? No. Is her certifiable? No

Props Justin, for giving us an unvarnished example of a lefty kook. May he toil in obscurity. I don't think business will be that good for him, given that there's a liberal champion in the White House. (I don't reallly think Obama is all that liberal, but he he's still their champion.) It's like Schulz just opened a hot dog stand but all his customers just ate.

Since I don't haunt cable news, I wasn't really aware that MSNBC was trying to fill the market for lefty kooks.

I might need to check this guy out, just to see if his act is any good. The thing with guys like Limbaugh and Beck is that they are very good at what they are doing. They know the script, and which buttons to push.

Does Shultz? Based on this he seems to be a bit ham-fisted, a poor mimic. Not bad, but still needs work.

I listened to it again. I thought he was talking about the puppets put in motion by the people like Beck and Limbaugh and Hannity not the talking holes themselves. I doubt with the possible exception of Beck that any of them are nuts enough to want Obama dead. I do think they would be accessories if it did happen. At some point they should be held responsible for their irresponsibility. But upon further review, it was over the line.

I don't think this comment needs defending, it's an opinion and I believe there are those who do feel that way. I didn't mention Facebook to say they are on a par with a network show, I mentioned Facebook because daily I see posts that show Schultz is calling it like it is rather than libeling people. I know a lot of people who are worried that something could happen to Obama.

As for Maddow, she isn't a reporter, she's a commentator. And to my ears still far more professional and factual than the vast majority of people on any network. Her conclusions are what the commentating part is. As for snarky, you've obviously not paid close attention to George Will or Joe Scarborough.

If you want something over the line, it would be Schultz's rant last night or the day before. I wouldn't defend that.

the Word,

I posted an unfinished version of this post earlier without the blockquote and associated language. My apologies if there was any confusion.

As far as postings on Facebook...those are postings of Facebook. This is a guy with a network show. Huge difference.

I do think Maddow is much more careful with how she presents facts, but her snark undercuts her credibility. If she lost that and simply reported the way she COULD report, I'd be much more prone to highlight her as a serious liberal thinker. But this "politainment" nonsense that Fox News and MSNBC is building their brands out of is dumb, and it's not good for the discourse. Do know I think Fox News is far worse than MSNBC, but Schultz went WAY over the line on this one, and I honestly can't see how you can defend him.

Heh...Captcha is: skulls and

First of all the title is incredibly misleading. It is far worse than what you are accusing him of saying. Second, over the top, yes a harsh assessment. Off the mark, you need to get out more often. As someone who was afraid of Obama running because there are still a lot of racist whack jobs in the country and extremists that are exactly like who he is talking about, I was afraid some kook would assassinate him, the GOP and fringe have done nothing to make me think we are headed for enlightened disagreement anytime soon. A friend just yesterday--repeatedly said of Michael Moore "He's a fat lying piece of shit and I truly hope he chokes on his own vomit and dies!" I've seen many posts like that on Facebook and they get mostly agreement from those on the Right so I don't think hSchultz is off the mark. Had he said Boehner wanted him shot (like Beck saying Obama is a racist) that would have been irresponsible, but I have no doubt that some in these Tea Parties feel exactly like what he was saying.

As for MSNBC, Rachel Maddow routinely asks this question "Was that a fair summary of the facts and your position?" before she interviews people and I don't know of anyone else on the air I have ever heard do that other than her before each interview. It would NEVER happen on Faux News.
