I have a question – does having these debates really make sense? Is there any evidence to suggest that being a skilled debater translates into what traits are needed to be a good President of the United States? Has anyone ever studied that?

It’s one of many vehicles for folks to familiarize themselves with the candidates. That’s all it is. I don’t think anyone is putting the kind of stock in them that you’re suggesting. Think about it this way: without debates, all they’d ever do is make speeches. At least during a debate they’re occasionally being challenged.
