The Weak, Sad Defense Of Sarah Palin

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, McCain, Media, Palin, Republicans, Veep

So far the Republican talking points are basically, “The media is sexist and they’re engaging in partisan hit jobs.”
Yes, it’s now “partisan” to find out facts other than the talking points dolled out by the McCain camp.
Sure….
I suppose the media was racist and engaging in partisan hit jobs when they hammered Obama repeatedly over Jeremiah [...]

Rasmussen: Obama Up By 5, 5

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Biden, Conventions, Democrats, McCain, Palin, Polls, Republicans

With leaners
Obama - 50%
McCain - 45%
Without leaners
Obama - 48%
McCain - 43%
Not much change since yesterday, with Obama/Biden dropping one in the “with leaners” numbers, but still maintaining a significant lead over McCain/Palin.
Something interesting…both Prez candidates seemed to have lost ground after their VP selections…
With the two conventions back-to-back, the two Vice-Presidential picks so close together, [...]

The Biggest Night Of Sarah Palin’s Career

By Doug Mataconis | Related entries in 2008 Election, McCain, Palin, Republicans

There’s no question that the five days since John McCain announced that Alaska Governor Sarah Palin was his choice for his Vice-Presidential running mate have been a rough ride. From the beginning, she has been subjected to scrutiny unrivaled since George H.W. Bush choose Dan Quayle as his running mate back in 1988.
Some of [...]

RNC Theme: McCain’s Tough. And, oh, a Maverick.

By Alan Stewart Carl | Related entries in 2008 Election, McCain, RNC

Did you watch the first night of speeches at the Republican National Convention? President Bush made a fleeting appearance on a big screen. Fred Thompson needed a throat lozenge but did a decent job of emotionally delivering the story of John McCain’s POW years and got in a few good shots across the Obama/Biden bow. [...]

Gallup: Obama Up By 8

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Biden, Democrats, McCain, Palin, Polls, Republicans

Big news in both the Rasmussen and Gallup, as he hits 50% in Gallup’s, the first that’s happened. In Rasmussen he hit 51%.

The details…
Prior to now, no more than 49% of registered voters supported Obama for president in Gallup Poll Daily tracking. Still, Obama’s eight percentage point lead over McCain in the new poll falls [...]

Rasmussen: Obama Up By 6, 5

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Biden, Democrats, McCain, Palin, Polls, Republicans, Veep

With leaners
Obama - 51%
McCain - 45%
Without leaners
Obama - 48%
McCain - 43%
Lots of activity the past couple days in the prez race, and since Obama’s numbers have started to inch up past the 50% mark, perhaps the news about Palin is making people nervous.
One note, this the first time in the Rasmussen poll that Obama has [...]

RNC Scrambling to Get Back on Track

By Alan Stewart Carl | Related entries in 2008 Election, McCain, Palin, RNC

Now that Hurricane Gustav has, thankfully, turned out not to be nearly as devastating as previously feared, the Republican National Convention is scrambling to get back on track. Beginning today, the Republicans will return to the staunch partisanship for which political conventions are known and try to get back on message.
The reorganized convention will include [...]

Did McCain Really Vet Sarah Palin?

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Alaska, McCain, Palin, Veep

As more question marks emerge about Palin, I can’t help but think the answer to the titular question is “Barely.”
TPM points out what has been revealed about Palin just yesterday…
* The news that Palin once backed the Bridge to Nowhere went national.
* It emerged that Palin has links to the bizarro Alaska Independence Party, which [...]

Obama: Palin’s Family is Off-Limits

By Alan Stewart Carl | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Palin

I’m glad to see Barack Obama speak out against the coverage swirling around Sarah Palin’s daughter. I think this is pretty clear:
“Let me be as clear as possible,” Obama said. “I think people’s families are off-limits, and people’s children are especially off-limits. This shouldn’t be part of our politics. It has no relevance to Gov. [...]

Palin More Reform-Minded than Obama?

By Alan Stewart Carl | Related entries in 2008 Election, Alaska, Barack, Change, Ethics, Illinois, Palin

In an otherwise by-the-numbers pro-Sarah Palin editorial, The Wall Street Journal makes one very interesting point:
Mr. Obama rose through the Chicago Democratic machine without a peep of push-back. Alaska’s politics are deeply inbred and backed by energy-industry money. Mr. Obama slid past the kind of forces that Mrs. Palin took head on.
Palin became Alaska’s governor [...]

Republicans All But Cancel First Day of Convention

By Alan Stewart Carl | Related entries in 2008 Election, McCain, RNC

Well, it’s official. Hurricane Gustav has prompted the Republicans toall but cancel the first day of their convention, meeting only briefly, out of primetime, to take care of the official business of opening the convention. Apparently, this change was on the orders of John McCain who also implored Republicans to not act like partisans but [...]

A Negative Reaction to Obama’s Speech

By Alan Stewart Carl | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, DNC

Most of the critiques of Barack Obama’s acceptance speech have been positive. That’s why David Broder’s opinion interested me. He thinks Obama did a poor job. In fact, Broder thinks the whole convention was a missed opportunity.
I won’t spend a lot of time summarizing Broder’s opinion. It can be basically summed up as “too many [...]

From Miss Congeniality To “Sarah Barracuda”, How Sarah Palin Changed From A Pro-Tax Politician To A Ruthless Pol

By Glenn Church | Related entries in 2008 Election, Palin

Sarah Palin has been Governor of Alaska for less than two years. Her longest stint as a political official was as mayor of the tiny town of Wasilla, Alaska, for six years. Today, Wasilla has less than 7,000 residents. When Sarah Palin was elected to its city council in 1992, its population was 4,635. In [...]

Palin Energizes Conservative Activists

By Alan Stewart Carl | Related entries in 2008 Election, Abortion, Conservatism, Guns and Ammo, McCain, Palin, Veep

Despite criticism from several quarters, the Sarah Palin pick is being received very well by core Republicans.
Palin, say conservative activists, has instantly changed how they feel about [John] McCain’s campaign and spurred them to go to work for the Republican ticket.
First, though, they’re expressing their newfound fondness for McCain with their checkbooks. Since tapping Palin, [...]

Gustav May Force RNC to Change Plans

By Alan Stewart Carl | Related entries in 2008 Election, McCain, RNC

Word coming out of the Republican National Convention is that Hurricane Gustav may dramatically affect the proceedings to the point of causing the RNC to postpone the event. There is also talk of turning the convention into a massive fundraiser for victims of the storm.
By the sound of it, the Republicans are not going to [...]

Chuck Todd on why McCain picked Palin

By mw | Related entries in 2008 Election, Good Decisions, McCain, Palin

Despite my repeated and patient explanations, Justin continues to be confused about the reason for the Palin pick and is wondering again “what exactly was McCain thinking?”.
Since JG has also expressed his admiration for Chuck Todd as an analyst (something on which we agree), perhaps Chuck’s explanation will be helpful. I think Chuck [...]

Gallup: Obama Maintains 8 Point Lead

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Biden, Democrats, Independents, McCain, Palin, Polls, Republicans

Obama probably won’t be able to hold this lead, but this number does include the day of Obama’s speech and the Palin announcement the next day.
Still, with the Repub convention next week, this is bound to swing back McCain’s way.

The details…
The current results are based on Aug. 27-29 interviewing, which includes two nights of polling [...]

Steve Doocy Dishes A Doozy On Palin’s Experience

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Dumb Things Said By Smart People, McCain, Palin, Republicans, Russia, Video

Just watch…

That’s right. Sarah Palin has foreign relations experience because Alaska is near Russia.
Wow.
I also love how the other guy on panel talks about how politics is all about exceeding expectations. And since expectations are extremely low for Palin, she’ll be able to impress people.
I’m sorry, but isn’t that exactly how we got into this [...]
