Reversal: Palin Doesn’t Call For Stevens To Resign

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Alaska, Palin, Senate

First she said he should.
Now she’s deferring to others, which is the same as backing away from her previous statements without explicitly saying as much.
This is a pretty big development, and one that signals Palin’s unwillingness to cede the Senate seat to a Democrat. Because Stevens challenger Mark Begich would obviously be the favorite [...]

Newsweek: Palin Fought Decisions Behind The Scenes

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Ayers, History, McCain, Palin, Video

Yes, she actually did go rogue, and even more so than previously thought.

The William Ayers thing is telling and suggests that she definitely has killer political instincts. Nothing wrong with that, but it definitely reinforces the image of Palin as the “mean girl.”
However, the news that she was unwilling to share the stage with [...]

Newsweek: Obama A Difficult Person To Know

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, History, Video

More video from the folks who had full access behind the scenes. And I think I’m just going to post all of these because they’re really great little glimpses into the 2008 election.

While, I think it’s true that all Presidents have to make sure the American people see their humanity, with two beautiful young daughters [...]

Newsweek: On Palin’s Shopping Spree

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, History, McCain, Money, Palin, Video

These were the reporters behind the scenes telling it in their own words…

As I’ve said before, I can buy the spending spree story since the truth will eventually come out when the RNC audits everything. That makes me think that aides wouldn’t lie about this.
The other stuff, like the Africa and Nafta stories, I just [...]

Palin Fights Back Against Smears

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, History, Palin, Partisan Hacks

As many of you know, I was a pretty strong critic of Sarah Palin during the campaign given my opinion of her unreadiness for the VP spot, but now I find myself defending the veracity of her intellect.
All I can say is that the pursuit of truth and fairness can sometimes make strange bedfellows.
So [...]

FiveThirtyEight Thinks Alaska Senate Could Go Blue

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Alaska, Palin, Senate

Why?
Because early, absentee and provisional votes seem to favor challenger Mark Begich (pictured above).
Analysis from Nate Silver:
Although Ted Stevens currently holds a lead of approximately 3,200 votes in ballots counted to date in Alaska’s senate contest, there is good reason to believe that the ballots yet to be counted — the vast majority of [...]

Jon Stewart On Prop 8 Passage

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, California, Marriage, Race, Sexuality, Video

As usual, he’s pitch perfect…

Yes, the idea that increased African American turnout may have helped passed this ridiculous discrimination so tragically ironic it hurts. I mean…69% supported this ban? In California?? Really???
Truly crazy stuff. And it proves, yet again, that discrimination knows no color and we have a long, long way to go before we [...]

Minnesota Senate Race Still Tight As A Drum

By Doug Mataconis | Related entries in 2008 Election

It’s been four days since Election Day, but there’s still no resolution to the Senate race in Minnesota:
The U.S. Senate race in Minnesota is nowhere close to being decided, state officials said yesterday.
The recount in that election will not be completed until mid-December, and even then, a candidate or voter can challenge the outcome, Secretary [...]

Obama Wins One Electoral Vote In Nebraska

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Electoral College, Nebraska

Yesterday I talked about how it could happen.
Today it’s a reality.
From Omaha World-Herald:
The Democratic presidential candidate claimed an electoral vote in the Omaha-based 2nd Congressional District — the first time in more than four decades a Democrat won any of Nebraska’s electoral votes.
The Omaha World-Herald is calling the race after Obama won 8,434 out of [...]

How He Did It

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, History

Newsweek is doing one of those extensively detailed, behind-the-scenes stories about how the President elect got to be the President elect. This is the stuff that political junkies like me live for, and I can’t recommend it more highly.
The following is from the first part in the series. There will be 6 more.
The beginning…

Quote Of The Day

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Economy, Quotes

“I’ve been very impressed with the caliber of people around Obama. There’s great hope they won’t fall down a partisan path.”
- Kevin Hassett, John McCain’s top economic advisor in a Fortune article
Still, Obama’s plan will be a government driven economic model in the short term, so we’re not going to see the deficit go down [...]

2008 Turnout Virtually Identical To 2004 Turnout

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Voting

Two days ago I asked the question “Where are the 130M votes?”
Well, it seems like my basic math skills beat the predictions.
2004 Vote Total: 121,069,054
2008 Vote Total: 122,145,887
That’s a far cry from the projections of 130M+ we were told on Wednesday, and even with all the absentee and provisional ballots floating around out there, I [...]

Obama’s Economic Rescue Package Starts To Take Shape

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Economy, Video

Former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers discusses some broad overarching points on the Today show…

Quick prediction…Larry Summers will be Treasury Secretary. Yes, he definitely has baggage, but he’s well respected in his field and is enough of a conservative economic voice that he’ll help steady the markets. Also, I know at least one right winger who [...]

A Nail-Biter In Minnesota

By Doug Mataconis | Related entries in 2008 Election

They’re still counting votes in the Minnesota Senate race, and it’s looking like it will turn out to be one of the closest Senate races in a long time:
Just as Secretary of State Mark Ritchie was explaining to reporters the recount process in one of the narrowest elections in Minnesota history, an aide rushed in [...]

Obama Could Get One Electoral Vote From Nebraska

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Electoral College, Nebraska

That’s right. Obama may actually win Omaha.
So if this happens, and you accept that Obama won North Carolina and Missouri will eventually go for McCain, then the electoral count will look like this…
Obama: 365
McCain: 173
More from Omaha World-Herald:
His odds of bagging an electoral vote in Nebraska grew stronger this morning, with word that 10,000 to [...]

Republican Lindsey Graham Praises Rahm Emanuel Appointment

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Republicans

Very gracious of Graham to say, especially when Republicans are already spinning this.
This from the AP:
“This is a wise choice by President-elect Obama.
“Rahm knows Capitol Hill and has great political skills. He can be a tough partisan but also understands the need to work together. He is well-suited for the position of [...]

David Axelrod Will Be Obama’s Senior Adviser

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack

Again, no surprises so far. Axelrod was one of the key strategists in Obama’s phenomenal campaign, and he’s known in many circles as a consensus builder. Sort of the anti-Rove Rove. A guy who can get things done, but doesn’t get dirty doing it.
This move even more sense if you think about how close Axelrod [...]

Franken Calls For Recount In Minnesota Senate Race

By Doug Mataconis | Related entries in 2008 Election

As Norm Coleman’s lead in counted vote dwindles, the inevitable call for a recount has been made:
Democrat Al Franken, locked in an overtime election battle with incumbent Republican Sen. Norm Coleman, said today that he is pushing ahead with the recount of Tuesday’s voting.
“No, no,” Franken said in an interview on Minnesota Public Radio late [...]

The Mandate Spin Begins

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Change

Did Obama get a mandate?
Well, let’s look at the facts…

He flipped 9 states from red to blue, including a few that hadn’t gone for the Dem in over 3 decades.

He beat McCain 2 to 1 in the electoral count.

The current popular vote difference is 53% to 46% or 7.6 million votes.

And let’s not kid ourselves…Obama [...]
