By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Debates, Independents, McCain, Polls

This according to Ipsos/McClatchy…
Washington, DC – A new Ipsos/McClatchy poll of undecided voters who watched last night’s second Presidential debate indicates that Barack Obama seems to be picking up momentum among the small number of voters who have not yet decided on a candidate.
Before the debate, these undecided voters leaned toward John McCain (Obama [...]

More Town Hall Fallout For McCain

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Debates, McCain

McCain should have known better than to tell somebody that they didn’t know a fact about the economic crisis.
Because something like this may happen…
How did I feel about Sen. McCain stating “You probably never heard of Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac before this.”
Well Senator, I actually did. I like to think of myself as [...]

Obama Won The Post-Debate Game

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Debates, McCain

The New York Times talked to three people in the audience at the town hall on Tuesday, and they all thought the actual debate was a wash.
However, after the debate left, McCain stuck around for a few minutes and then left. Obama stayed for a long time and tired to shake everybody’s hand.
Here’s what the [...]

McCain Should Have Challenged Obama More

By Alan Stewart Carl | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Debates, McCain

The Wall Street Journal nails why John McCain lost last night’s debate. He failed to challenge Barack Obama on substantive matters.
One of Mr. Obama’s gifts is his ability to glide over contradictions with the greatest of ease. He spent minutes explaining that we spend “$10 billion a month” in Iraq that should be spent here [...]

Obama Didn’t Win. McCain Lost.

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Debates, McCain

When historians look back on this election, I actually think that this debate will prove to be an important opportunity missed by McCain. Tonight he had to “take the gloves off” and he didn’t even come close.
I was talking to a coworker today about the election and tonight’s debate, and I put it this way. [...]

Taegan Goddard Calls It For Obama

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Debates, McCain

The editor of the non-partisan Political Wire thinks Obama won…big:
Tonight’s debate wasn’t even close. Sen. Barack Obama ran away with it — particularly when speaking about the economy and health care. Talking about his mother’s death from cancer was very powerful. On nearly every issue, Obama was more substantive, showed more compassion and was more [...]

“That One”

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Debates, McCain, Video

McCain’s biggest shot at Obama tonight…

I just don’t think McCain connected with the audience as well as Obama did tonight.
I’ll have more thoughts soon.

Debate Reaction

By Alan Stewart Carl | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Debates, McCain

Last Spring, Barack Obama stumbled through the Democratic debates, seeming unsure and unfocused. Tonight, he nailed almost every question. Agree or disagree with his arguments, it’s hard to argue that he was anything but poised and informed. He may have won his party’s nomination with soaring rhetoric, but he’s winning the general election with smart [...]

Drudge On The Debate

Everybody wanted fireworks. This one had none.
And so…

Obama is going to run out the clock on this one. He can counterpunch with the best of them.
Also, no gloves came off here, and that’s the big story tonight.

What Are Debate Watchers Looking For?

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Debates, McCain, Video

As if you didn’t know already, it’s reassurance on the economy.

Again, I’d be surprised if McCain really goes after Obama tonight, but I don’t know if he really has any other choice.
In any event, what are you looking for?

There are a lot of options for this (CNN, Current, C-Span), but I’d say MSNBC’s video offering is the best by far.
However, there’s a new player in town called Hulu, and if you haven’t been to their site yet, you’re missing out. The joint venture between NBC Universal and News Corp. offers hundreds upon [...]

Chuck Toddy’s Debate Preview

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Debates, McCain, Video

The best analyst breaks it down…

Some good points about how hard it’ll be for either candidate to go negative. Especially in this town hall format. And honestly, I think the first one to get really negative loses the debate.
Also, those Obama/Biden 50%, McCain/Palin 29% debate numbers are pretty astonishing. But those are the first two [...]

A Question for Obama on that Tax Cut

By Alan Stewart Carl | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Debates, Taxes

Writing for the Wall Street Journal, William McGurn reminds us what happened the last time a Democrat presidential candidate promised to cut middle-class taxes. That’s right, Bill Clinton forgot his pledge even before taking office and went on to raise taxes on almost everyone. Is there any reason to expect a repeat from a Barack [...]

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Debates, McCain

As I’ve done with the first prez debate and the only veep debate, I’ll be “open streaming” the debate.
So what’s that?
Well, instead of “liveblogging” the debate, which is incredibly hard to do and doesn’t really allow me any interaction with you, I’ll just kick off a post and start posting comments below the post. And [...]
