By Alan Stewart Carl | Related entries in Energy, Environment

A new report by the International Energy Agency offers a basic roadmap to drastically cutting fossil fuel emissions by 2050.
The study said that an average of 35 coal-powered plants and 20 gas-powered power plants would have to be fitted with carbon capture and storage equipment each year between 2010 and 2050.
In addition, the world would [...]

Climate Change Bill Headed For Defeat?

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Energy, Environment, Legislation, Lieberman

As is the case with many pieces of legislation…it doesn’t seem to have enough institutional support.
From Fortune:
The U.S. Climate Action Partnership formed last year won’t take a position on the bill, although nine of its members - including General Electric, Alcoa and four utility companies - signed a letter to senators backing the legislation.
The letter, [...]

$4 Gas Mandate a Poor Idea

By Alan Stewart Carl | Related entries in Energy, Gas, Taxes

Thomas Friedman thinks the federal government should mandate $4.00 a gallon gas. Why? Because now that we’ve pretty much reached that price point, people are finally changing their habits, driving less and buying smaller cars. Friedman wants to make sure we don’t go back to our gas-guzzling ways.
For many years raising gas taxes to spur [...]

Americans Cut Back On Driving

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Energy, Gas, Money, Oil

Feeling the pinch at the pump? Starting to rethink your extracurricular driving activities?
You’re not alone…
Compared with March a year earlier, Americans drove an estimated 4.3 percent less — that’s 11 billion fewer miles, the DOT’s Federal Highway Administration said Monday, calling it “the sharpest yearly drop for any month in FHWA history.” Records have been [...]

The Peak Oil Theory Revisited

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Economy, Energy, Environment, Gas, History, Money, Oil, Video

In March 2007, I wrote about the Peak Oil theory and posted a pretty alarming video. And now that we’re seeing record gas prices, the whispers of peak oil are surfacing once again.
So, here’s the video that outlines the theory…

Then, here’s a post from the Prometheus: The Science Policy Weblog about the topic and how [...]

Bio Oil Gets Grilled On Capitol Hill

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Economy, Energy, Gas, Money, Oil, Taxes, Video

How do they explain their record profits? Good planning? Price gouging? Lucky breaks?
First CBS has this report…

I like that…the reason their profits are so big is because their companies are so big? I guess we all should just start building bigger companies then, yeah?
Then from the AP, and note how one of them talks about [...]

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Economy, Energy, Gas, Money, Oil

Here in Kansas City, MO, the gas prices are nearing $3.70 a gallon. And with news like this, I’m guessing we’ll see $4.00 very soon.
From AP:
The June contract for light, sweet crude traded as high as $129.58 on the New York Mercantile Exchange before settling back to $129.12, up $2.07. The imminent expiration of the [...]

Obama’s Environmental Manufacturing Plan

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Democrats, Energy, Environment, McCain, Money, Republicans

As I mentioned in yesterday’s post about McCain’s seemingly paper thin plan to help the environment, Obama’s plan would provide immediate funds to help create the technology that will help big polluters get cleaner and ultimately buy fewer emission credits.
Here’s more from MSNBC:
Here in [Michigan], he unveiled his proposals for reviving American manufacturing. The plan [...]

McCain’s Big Idea On Environment Is Cap-And-Trade?

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Energy, Environment, Hillary

Folks, the idea of trading emission credits between companies has been around for nearly 20 years in this country, and McCain has been a proponent for quite some time. And sure, the expansion of the program could help curb some greenhouse gases, but this is McCain’s big idea?
From his speech yesterday…
“The United States will [...]

McCain Launches Environmental Campaign

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Energy, Environment, McCain, Video

For the next couple weeks he’ll be talking about how we can address these problems.
And maybe in a sign of how progressive McCain seems to be on the environment, the Sierra Club says they may not endorse anybody in 2008.
From WSJ:
In a sign of Sen. McCain’s potential appeal to environmentally conscious voters, a top official [...]

McCain Planning Climate Change Tour

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Economy, Energy, Environment, McCain

One bit of good “moderate” news that’s going to come out of the 2008 campaign, climate change is at the forefront of both agendas.
From The Examiner:
“John McCain is going to be doing more of these themed tours of America, and one of them is going to be on energy and global climate change. It could [...]

$126 A Barrel

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Energy, Gas, Oil, Venezuela

Yep, it’s getting worse.
So how long before $200?
Well, if we move against Hugo Chavez…probably not that long:
On Friday, The Wall Street Journal published a report that suggested closer ties between Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and rebels attempting to overthrow Colombia’s government, heightening chances that the U.S. could impose sanctions on one of its biggest oil [...]

Hillary Threatens OPEC

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Energy, Gas, Hillary, The World

She’s talking pretty big about going after big oil…but can she really do anything about OPEC?
Politico reports:
“We’re going to go right at OPEC,” she said. “They can no longer be a cartel, a monopoly that get together once every couple of months in some conference room in some plush place in the world, they decide [...]

Clinton Attacks Obama on Gas Tax

By Alan Stewart Carl | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Energy, Hillary, Taxes

Looks like Hillary Clinton is trying to ride her support of a gas tax holiday to victory. She has now released an ad attacking Barack Obama for opposing the plan. I guess when you’re behind, pandering is the best option. But this doesn’t do much to bolster her claim that her experience is what matters. [...]

Hillary Using Shell Oil Lobbyist To Push Gas Tax

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Economy, Energy, Gas, Hillary

Since she can’t find any economists who will agree with her, I guess a lobbyist will have to do.
From ABC News:
“There’s not an expert out there that believes that this is going to work. There’s not an editorial out there that has said this is actually the answer to high gas prices,” Obama said of [...]

Robert Reich notes something Hillary said during her appearance on ABC’s This Week today…

She’s not going [...]

Bring Gas Prices Down For Good?

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Energy, Gas, Legislation, McCain, Video

That’s one of the last lines of this commercial. Think that’s a bit of an overstatement given that Clinton and McCain are proposing that this is only a Gas Tax Holiday?
Watch it and judge for yourself…

Honestly, please explain to me how this proposed legislation will bring the gas prices down for the foreseeable future.

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Energy, Iraq, McCain, The World, War
