By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Biden, Democrats, Independents, McCain, Palin, Polls, Republicans

McCain gains one and Obama loses one for a net two point gain for the Arizona senator and his new running mate.

Another significant mark for McCain…this is the first time he has hit 49%. Previously his high was 48%.
More from Gallup about historical bounces:
That is slightly better than Barack Obama’s four-point bounce from 45% in [...]

Rasmussen: McCain Up By 1, 1

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Biden, Democrats, Independents, McCain, Palin, Polls, Republicans

With leaners
Obama - 47%
McCain - 48%
Without leaners
Obama - 46%
McCain - 47%
Some slight movement from McCain today, but nothing to suggest the massive 10 point lead in likely voters that the USA Today/Gallup poll suggested.
See, this is why I follow the daily polls. Because when something like Gallup comes out, everybody here on Donklephant knows [...]

USA/Gallup: McCain Up By 4, 10

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Biden, Democrats, Independents, McCain, Palin, Polls, Republicans

Among registered voters, the numbers look like this…
McCain - 50%
Obama - 46%
However, the bigger news is among the likely voters numbers…
McCain - 54%
Obama - 44%
And as many of know, likely voters are usually a better indicator of who will come out to the polls. That’s why Rasmussen’s daily numbers don’t swing as wildly as [...]

Gallup: McCain Up By 3

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Biden, Democrats, Independents, McCain, Palin, Polls, Republicans

McCain enjoys a 5 point swing today from yesterday when Obama led by 2.

Gallup shares more…
McCain’s 48% share of the vote ties for his largest since Gallup tracking began in early March. He registered the same level of support in early May. This is also McCain’s largest advantage over Obama since early May, when he [...]

With leaners
Obama - 48%
McCain - 48%
Without leaners
Obama - 46%
McCain - 46%
And now we have the first major evidence that McCain is actually getting enough of a bounce out of the convention to make a difference.

McCain earns the vote from 89% of Republicans while Obama is supported [...]

A big drop today of 3 points, as evidence of a McCain bounce is surfacing in Gallup and Rasmussen’s numbers.

The details…
Support for Obama since just before the Democratic National Convention kicked off on Aug. 25 has ranged from 44% to 50%, while McCain’s support has ranged from 41% to 46%. Whereas the race was initially [...]

Independents and Palin.

By mw | Related entries in Barack, Biden, Independents, McCain, Palin

Reading Justin’s post this morning, it seemed clear that independents were singularly unmoved by Sarah Palin’s speech last night. I was surprised by this result, but facts are facts. Four independent voters were interviewed by the Fair & Balancedâ„¢ Detroit Free Press and the results were unanimous and unambiguous - The Palin speech had no [...]

Sarah…Decent Speech, But A Big Strategic Mistake

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Conventions, Independents, McCain, Palin, Republicans

My questions…as addressed to Sarah Palin…

Why give a speech that was really designed to rally the Republican base when John McCain consistently gets more Republican support than Obama gets Democratic support?

Why go on the attack with petty snipes at Obama when you have the chance to frame yourself as a true, transformative political figure and [...]

Gallup: Obama Maintains 8 Point Lead

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Biden, Democrats, Independents, McCain, Palin, Polls, Republicans

Obama probably won’t be able to hold this lead, but this number does include the day of Obama’s speech and the Palin announcement the next day.
Still, with the Repub convention next week, this is bound to swing back McCain’s way.

The details…
The current results are based on Aug. 27-29 interviewing, which includes two nights of polling [...]

Rasmussen: Obama Up By 4, 4

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Biden, Democrats, Independents, McCain, Palin, Polls, Republicans

With leaners
McCain - 49%
Obama - 45%
Without leaners
Obama - 47%
McCain - 43%
The numbers stay steady today, so perhaps the Palin announcement has had the desired effect of stopping any additional bounce for Obama.
One note, Obama still has a lead among women…but will he next week?
Obama currently leads by thirteen points among women while McCain leads by [...]

Gallup: Obama Up By 8

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Biden, Conventions, Democrats, Independents, McCain, Palin, Polls, Republicans

The bump continues, as Obama extends his lead by 2 points today. However, these numbers don’t include his speech last night, which should push these numbers higher.

The details…
Obama’s significant lead over McCain almost certainly reflects the effects of the Democratic National Convention. The two presidential candidates were tied at 45% in the last Gallup Poll [...]

With leaners
McCain - 49%
Obama - 45%
Without leaners
Obama - 46%
McCain - 43%
More evidence of a convention bump for Obama today, but will McCain’s supposedly unconventional Veep pick capture the imagination of swing voters and former, disgruntled Hillary voters?
And concerning Sarah Palin…Rasmussen reveals that nearly 7 in 10 voters don’t even really know her…

Obama scores a 5 point bump from yesterday to regain a sizable lead and hit the 48% mark for the first time since his overseas trip.

And, as Gallup notes, these numbers don’t take into account Clinton and Biden’s speeches…

Lieberman Asked For More Veep Information

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Democrats, Independents, Lieberman, McCain, Republicans, Veep

Well, the Republican Veepstakes just took another interesting turn, as whispers that not only has Rove asked Lieberman not to run, but he has also been asked to provide more information to the McCain camp.
From Politico:
AP’s Liz Sidoti reported: “Inside GOP circles Thursday, speculation swirled around Lieberman. It was fueled by reports that McCain’s advisers [...]

With leaners
McCain - 47%
Obama - 47%
Without leaners
Obama - 45%

Obama gained one in each set up numbers today so now he leads by 1 in the “without” leaners numbers, but he’s still not seeing any appreciable bump from the initial Biden announcement, and I think the time has officially passed when he could have [...]

Gallup: Obama Up By 1

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Biden, Democrats, Independents, McCain, Polls, Republicans

Obama actually gains a net 3 today, with McCain losing 2 and him gaining 1. Obviously this race remains incredibly tight as we head towards the most important speech of Obama’s career on Thursday.

The details…

Rasmussen: McCain Up By 1, Tied

With leaners
McCain - 47%
Obama - 46%
Without leaners
Obama - 44%
McCain - 44%
McCain edges up one and this is significant since he hasn’t really been above the 45% mark for a while in the “with leaners” numbers. So now this is two straight days, which could position him well for sustaining any type of bump he gets [...]

Gallup: McCain Leads By 2

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Biden, Democrats, Independents, McCain, Polls

And so the tables have turned, at least for today. Of note, Obama hasn’t been at 44% for a LONG time. In fact, the last time was before he secured the nomination back in early June. The same goes for McCain, who hasn’t reached 46% since the same time period.
My guess as to why? The [...]

Gallup: Obama, McCain Tied At 45%

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Biden, Democrats, Independents, McCain, Polls, Republicans

Same numbers as yesterday, and I think what we may be seeing here is a small backlash from Hillary supporters who were angered at the news that their gal hadn’t been picked as VP. But that may change after she speaks at the convention, especially if she makes the point that a vote for McCain [...]
