By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Arkansas, Kansas, McCain, North Dakota, Wyoming

What’s clear at this point is Obama will not get any sort of landslide.
Apparently the electorate isn’t THAT angry.

Florida Exit Polling Favors Obama

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Florida, McCain, Polls

From Ambinder…
Hispanics (projected to be 13% of the electorate in 2008) are giving Obama a 10 point margin; Bush won Hispanics in Florida by 12 points in 2004. Seniors seem to be breaking more heavily in favor of John McCain. Obama has a narrow edge among women; the two are tied among men in the [...]

Yes ladies and gentleman…progressive taxation is now akin to “robbing a bank.” Straight from Wurzelbacher’s mouth.
Amazing.

Quote Of The Day

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, McCain, Republicans

“Senator McCain has some great ideas but has not been able to communicate them in a way that would recognize the world has changed. Who knows whether there would have been a better candidate.”
- Jeb Bush in an interview with Miami’s CBS4.com
That really has to sting because it only reinforces that McCain has run [...]

Election Night Hour-by-Hour: What To Watch For

By Doug Mataconis | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, General Politics, McCain

This helpful map was created by the folks at Swing State Project

A few things that might be worth watching for as Election Night passes (all times Eastern, of course)
6:00 PM (Kentucky and Indiana): There’s little doubt that Kentucky will go for John McCain this year but there’s a serious question about Mitch McConnell’s Senate seat. [...]

41% Have Early Voted In North Carolina

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, McCain, North Carolina, Video, Voting

Why is this significant? Because 51% of those were Dems, 30% were Repubs and 19% were Indies.
So with 2.6M votes already in the bank, Dems have at least 1.3M of those to Repubs 860K.
Still, the turnout on election day promises to be massive.
MSNBC reports…

This favors Obama, but I’m still not convinced Obama will pull [...]

Barack Obama’s Victory Could Be Historic For More Than One Reason

By Doug Mataconis | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, General Politics, McCain

An interesting bit of historical trivia drawn from a much-longer post about final poll numbers at my personal blog:
No Democrat has gotten more than 51% of the popular vote in a Presidential Election since Lyndon Johnson’s landslide in 1964. Jimmy Carter got 50.1% in 1976, and Bill Clinton got 43% in 1992 and 49.24% in [...]

McCain’s Honor is Intact

By Alan Stewart Carl | Related entries in 2008 Election, McCain

Unless there are some very surprising results, John McCain will end the night as he started the race: the senior senator from Arizona. He will have lost his last chance to become president.
I don’t know what’s next for McCain. I hope he returns to the Senate with a revived energy, ready to be a formidable [...]

Whatever Happened To The Loyal Opposition?

By Doug Mataconis | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Democrats, General Politics, McCain, Republicans

Marshall Manson offers some timely advice to the supporters of whoever happens to lose the election today:
Challenging the legitimacy of an election is a serious thing to do. And with occasional exceptions, charges of fraud are almost always overblown and based on unreliable, anecdotal data.
Over the last few years, too many on both sides have [...]

Tonight Will Not Be A Landslide

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Electoral College, History, McCain

Why?
Because there’s no way they’ll match history…
With the final national polls settling around Obama +7, I realized that I lacked a good sense of historical context for that number. Turns out it’s about the margin of George H.W. Bush’s 1988 win against Michael Dukakis: 53.4% to 45.6%.
That’s certainly impressive. It doesn’t, however, really compare to [...]

We may be headed for something completely unexpected tonight.

Long Lines Greet Voters In Northern Virginia

By Doug Mataconis | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, McCain

If the early morning is any indication, it’s looking like turnout will be very heavy in Northern Virginia:
Lines formed hours early at polling places around the region this morning, as voters braced for unprecedented turnout and went out of their way to make sure they could cast their ballots.
Frank Douglas, a 67-year-old Woodbridge resident, was [...]
