After the nonsense this primary season, I can understand why Democrats across the board would want to diminish the importance of these folks.

From Wash Post:

Barack Obama’s campaign will call next week for the creation of a new commission to revise the rules for selecting a presidential nominee in 2012 with a goal of reducing the power of superdelegates, whose role became a major point of contention during the long battle between Obama and Hillary Clinton. [...]

The proposed changes grow out of discussions between Obama’s campaign team, officials at the Democratic National Committee and representatives of Hillary Clinton’s former presidential campaign, Plouffe said. [...]

“The number of super delegates has gotten too large in relation to overall delegates,” Plouffe said. “We want to give more control back to the voters…. Everyone thinks there ought to be more weight given to the results of the elections.”

Also, this new commission will be looking at changing up the primary schedule, although it doesn’t look likely that Iowa or New Hampshire will be moved around…

The other significant change is the call to redraw the primary and caucus calendar. The 2008 calendar drew significant criticism both for the early starting dates for the Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire primaries, and also because there were so many states crowded into the first month of what turned out to be a five-month campaign.

As envisioned by the Obama and Clinton campaigns, most contests could not be held before March, except for a handful of states authorized to go earlier — presumably in February rather than January.

I think these are all good changes, but I wish they’d mix up the primary calendar A LOT more. Give other states a chance to go first instead of Iowa and New Hampshire.

What do you think?

The tally put Obama over the top Tuesday, ahead of the results from the day’s final primaries in Montana and South Dakota.
Based on what? I haven’t seen the superdelegate tsunami some were reporting earlier, and all the sources I can find have him more than 30 delegates from clinching.

What gives?

Between wrongly reporting that Hillary will concede tonight, to now claiming Obama has clinched, it hasn’t been the best day for the AP’s credibility.

A further sign that things are coalescing behind the Illinois senator?

From CNN:

Most of the seventeen Democratic senators who have remained uncommitted throughout the primaries will endorse Barack Obama for president this week, CNN has learned.

Sources familiar with discussions between Obama supporters and these senators tell CNN’s Gloria Borger that the senators will wait until after the South Dakota and Montana primaries to announce their support for Obama.

Two sources familiar with the sessions said the endorsements will come sometime later this week.

So maybe we’re looking at 16 since Reid won’t endorse?

Politico thinks the number is 15…

The 15 uncommitted Senate superdelegates are meeting this afternoon to discuss how to proceed on making their endorsements and are likely to back Sen. Barack Obama in the next couple of days, sources tell Politico.

The cable networks called the island territory for Clinton the instant polls closed at 3:00 p.m., indicating a landslide; exit polls showed her winning virtually every group, including young voters typically loyal to nomination rival Barack Obama.

“I am overwhelmed by this vote today,” Clinton said in her victory speech. She used the speech to press the case that she’s proven her superior electability by pulling more popular votes than Obama.

She said more people have voted for her “than for any candidate in the history of presidential primaries. We are winning the popular vote.”

But is she really winning the popular vote? Because let’s remember that Clinton isn’t counting four caucus states that don’t report popular vote. With those, Obama is ahead by about 44,000 votes. Obviously this isn’t a large margin, but for her to claim outright that she leads the popular vote is misleading at best.

Right now the delegate count (according to Real Clear Politics) stands at…

Obama – 2,068
Clinton – 1,914

So Obama needs 50 to reach the new number of 2,118. The primaries on Tuesday should bring him within <strike>20</strike> 35 of that total.

So…will more than <strike>20</strike> 35 superdelegates stand up and stop this or will they wait until the convention?

More as it develops…

We’ll find out more this weekend after the DNC rules on Michigan and Florida, but my guess is that they’ll seat half the delegates per the existing rules.
More this weekend…

The last nail in Hillary’s coffin?

From TPM:

In what could potentially be a blow to Hillary’s electoral hopes, such as they are right now, the Democratic National Committee’s lawyers have declared that the Rules and Bylaws committee lacks the legal authority to seat the full Florida and Michigan delegations.

The DNC’s lawyers sent a memo late yesterday to members of the committee telling them that the two states must lose half of their convention delegates for skirting party rules and holding earlier elections.

That’s trouble for Hillary, who is pushing for a full seating of the delegations to narrow Obama’s pledged del lead and to proclaim herself the popular vote winner in order to argue that Dem primary voters didn’t render a clear verdict on their preference as nominee.

My guess is that they’ll seat half of the delegates.

We’ll see on Saturday!

He apparently has a flood of them set for right after the last primary, so get ready folks…the tide’s a comin’!

From Marc Ambinder:

Neither the Clinton nor the Obama campaign is clear what the DNC’s rules and bylaws committee will do on May 31; depending upon how or whether they re-allocate delegates, Obama could wind up within to 20 to 30 votes of the nomination — a situation rectifiable by a piddling performance in Puerto RIco, South Dakota and Montana — or more than 100 delegates short, requiring solid performances in those states plus a few dozen superdelegate endorsements to put him over the top.

To prepare for that eventuality, the Obama campaign has, for the first time, really, begun to bank delegates. Sources close to the campaign estimate that as many as three dozen Democratic superdelegates have privately pledged to announce their support for Obama on June 4 or 5. The campaign is determined that Obama not end the first week in June without securing the support of delegates numbering 2026 — or 2210, as the case may be.

May 31st is such a big day for so many reasons. And after that there will be a lot of talk of truly revamping this primary process so people Iowa and New Hampshire don’t always come first. Trust me on this…it’ll be bloody, but Iowa and New Hampshire will lose their first in the nation status in favor of a everybody-gets-a-shot-at-being-first regional system chosen via some lottery system. It’s inevitable.

But aside from that, Obama obviously has a plan to lock this thing up so he won’t have to worry about a fight at the convention. Still, with all these delegates pledging their support for Hillary, you never know what shenanigans they might try to pull…especially if something happens to Obama between now and then.

As always, there are many different totals, but Obama has been starting to rack up a lot more superdelegates in the last week and he’s very close to locking this up.

Obama – Pledged (1,656), Super (309.5), Total (1,965.5)
Clinton – Pledged (1499.5), Supers (279.5), Total (1779)
49 for Obama to win, 246 for Clinton to win

The big date now is May 31st when the DNC’s rules committee will vote on the status of Michigan and Florida’s contests. But if Obama can get 70 supers to swing his way before then, everybody will say this is over. If not, the DNC’s ruling could potentially upend this process and it may got to the convention.

More as it develops…

Most sites seem to have a different number, but let’s look at several of them and see where we’re at in the race to 2,026.

Real Clear Politics
Obama – 1975, 51 to win

Dem Con Watch
Obama – 1962, 64 to win
Clinton – 1777, 248 to win

MSNBC
Obama – 1960, 66 to win
Clinton – 1783, 243 to win

Now, if you asked Hillary, she’d say that the real number is 2,210, not 2,026. We’ll find out on May 31st if the DNC’s rules committee will actually reverse their previous decision and count Michigan and Florida.

Currently, though, this is where the numbers stand.

As I’ve noted yesterday, he’s been really racking them up lately, and depending on which news service you look at, he’s leading Hillary from anywhere between 26 and 16 supers.

Today, we have Guam Representative Madeleine Bordallo coming out for Obama:

“Today I have pledged my support as a superdelegate to Senator Barack Obama. Senator Obama offers us the leadership needed to address the challenges Guam and our nation will face in the coming years.

Senator Obama is working very closely with Senator Patrick Leahy, Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Judiciary, and other Senate leaders to secure more support for H.R. 1595, the Guam World War II Loyalty Recognition Act. Senator Obama fully understands and supports the efforts to seek full recognition for the patriotism and suffering endured by the people of Guam during enemy occupation in World War II.

And later today, Iowa DNC Chair Scott Brennan will announce.

Also here are a few superdelegate tallies…

Politico
Obama – 301.5
Obama – 303
Clinton – 278

Here’s the thing…he’s about 100 delegates away from clinching. And after the contests tonight, he’ll definitely be much, much closer.

Oh boy…she did not need this…

From Huff Post:

One of Sen. Hillary Clinton’s top financial supporters offered $1 million to the Young Democrats of America during a phone conversation in which he also pressed for the organization’s two uncommitted superdelegates to endorse the New York Democrat, a high-ranking official with YDA told The Huffington Post.

Haim Saban, the billionaire entertainment magnate and longtime Clinton supporter, denied the allegation. But four independent sources said that just before the North Carolina and Indiana primaries, Saban called YDA President David Hardt and offered what was perceived as a lucrative proposal: $1 million would be made available for the group if Hardt and the organization’s other uncommitted superdelegate backed Clinton.

Contacted about the report, Saban, initially very friendly, became curt. “Not true,” he said, “it’s simply not true.” He declined to elaborate. Did he talk to the YDA superdelegate? “I talk to many, many superdelegates. Some I don’t even remember their names.” Did he propose any financial transaction? “I have never offered them or anybody any money” in exchange for support or a vote, he said. The Clinton campaign did not return a request for comment.

Obviously this remains to be seen if it’s true, but one can’t help but think that Hardt is one of the sources mentioned…

“I said I thought that the appropriate response was to call Haim back and say thank you but we are not interested,” said the source. “I also said that it was surely the case that this story would get out because it is too interesting not to and they should think about how to deal with it. It was a day or two [before they responded]. They felt afraid. They were like, ‘Holy shit, this is Haim Saban.’”

Yes, holy shit it’s…who? Try the guy who’s responsible for the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. The world is a strange place…

In any event, good for the Young Democrats of America. They obviously did the right thing here and Saban should be ashamed of himself for trying to buy their votes…if he did buy their votes…which seems extremely likely.

I haven’t been keeping up with this very much lately so let’s go to the latest counts.

Politico
Obama – 296.5
Clinton – 270.5
Obama – +26

Real Clear Politics
Obama – +23

Dem Con Watch
Obama – 298.5
Obama – +22

PBS
Obama – 299
Obama – +21

MSNBC
Obama – 293
Clinton – 277
Obama – +16

There are more, but I think it’s pretty clear that Obama is starting to really pull away. Hillary either needs to demonstrate exactly how she’s going to win these supers back or call it quits. Because “anything can happen” is not a political strategy, it’s a wish.

A smart move on the Illinois senator’s part.

From Politico:

At the heart of the bid to steer reporters from the he-will-declare-victory narrative is a recognition that Clinton, who trails by a historically small margin, claims millions of supporters who don’t want her unceremoniously pushed out of the race. And the Democratic party views its chances in November as dependent upon its ability to reunite these opposing camps.

“Right now, it is all about unifying the party,” said Peter Fenn, a Democratic strategist unaffiliated with either campaign. “This election should be won by the Democrats if the Democrats unite behind a candidate. The one hope that McCain has is if the party splits. For Obama, who has so far been very concerned about antagonizing Clinton’s supporters, you are walking a fine line.”

Yes, better to just keep criss-crossing the country and running against John McCain.

Then, after June 3rd, the superdelegates will coalesce even more around Obama…who still leads in post-PA pickups by a margin of nearly 5 to 1 at this point.

And then Hillary can do as she has promised…to get behind Obama and fight for him with all she has. It’ll be interesting to see if that really happens…

By the way, I’m adding “Total Delegates Needed To Clinch” to the totals below because Obama is getting within 100.

First, Rep. Henry Waxman and Rep. Howard Berman of California…

Senator Obama’s vision for change has inspired tens of millions of Americans,” Chairman Waxman said. “And he’s also proved that he has the experience, judgment, integrity, and toughness to bring real reform to Washington. [...]

“Barack Obama has laid out a foreign policy vision driven by principle and conviction, and he understands that our moral authority and our safety as a nation go hand in hand,” Chairman Berman said. “I spoke with him about a number of foreign policy issues that most concern me. He assured me that he shares my views. The moment President Obama takes office, we’ll send a powerful message to the world that America is back and ready to lead again—that we haven’t abandoned the values that made us the light of the world, and neither should anyone else.”

Then, Rep. Jim McDermott…

Rep. Jim McDermott on Thursday became the fourth U.S. House member from Washington to endorse Barack Obama for president.

The Seattle Congressman told the P-I’s Joel Connelly that Obama is his pick because “I am confident as president he will end the war in Iraq and bring our sons and daughters home.”

Last, D.C. superdelegate and president of the Communications Workers of America, Larry Cohen…

In a statement, Cohen said that Obama “is building a broad base of support, inspiring new voters to join in the political process and demonstrating great appeal to all those who are looking for positive leadership to move us beyond politics-as-usual in Washington.”

Cohen also praised Clinton as “an excellent candidate and a staunch friend and advocate for American working men and women.”

With Childers’ win in Mississippi’s special election last night, another superdelegate has been added since all state representatives get a vote.

No word on who he’ll back, but Mississippi went really big (61% to 37%) for Obama.

By the way, Clinton and company have now revised their number to 2,210. I point this out only so you’ll know what to ignore.

But since we’re on the topic, here are some delegate numbers:

Pledged Delegates Won
Obama – 1599
Clinton – 1446
Advantage: Obama +153

Super Duper Delegates Won
Obama – 289.5
Clinton – 273.5
Advantage: Obama +16

Total Delegates Won
Obama – 1888.5
Clinton – 1719.5
Advantage: Obama +169

Delegates Needed To Clinch
Clinton – 306.5
Obama – 137.5

% of 441 Remaining Delegates Needed To Clinch
Clinton – 69%
Obama – 31%

Obviously these numbers fluctuate between news sources, but given that we’ve kept on top of this I’m pretty sure these are damn close.

More as it develops…
